If selling magic items didn't eem to be the norm in DnD 3e, then maybe Andy's point about the axe in the horde wouldn't be so true. Perhaps it could be used as a plot hook? Trading the axe with the spellsword so that he will further enchant the fighter's greatsword, or using the axe to gain acess to the king's ear.

I don't have magic shops lying around myself.
