[3.5] Starting B.A.M.S.

First Post
Even thou I mostly like 3.5... I sometimes have the slight impression they wanted to give it a "kewl" finish. Not happy to be fussing around with important stuff spell power balance and fiddling with combat maneuvers... they suddenly would do a step backwards for some "kewl" image.

My pet hate is Many Shot.

Not even Legolas in the Lord of the Rings film does it. He does everything else from skating on a shield to Super Rapid Shooting.... but not once have I seen anyone in fact or fiction do something as stupid as nocking more than 1 arrow. In fact they could probably fire 3 arrows in the time it takes to get 2 arrows placed together !

So I am starting:

B.othered
A.bout
M.any
S.hot -> B.A.M.S.

The 3.5 crew might have thougt it was "kewl"... i just think its silly. I simply cant see even elves doing something so outrageous. Making it as a standard Ranger ability at mid level power just makes it worse. Nevermind that the rest of the Ranger looked so good... until I read Many Shot.

(In fact I would love suggestions on what feat might more decently occupy that "slot" that the Ranger has.)

If you feel that B.A.M.S. shouldnt exist please enlighten me on the virtues of Many Shot and why it either viable or reasonable.... or if you feel just like me... please add your rant/opinion/suggestion or disgust to the thread.

He sure does. Go watch FotR again. :)

Anyways, manyshot isn't generally considered to be overpowered (although it may be silly); it's a full round action, so it doesn't stack with itierative attacks or rapid shot.

hhmm... he did ! Fellowship or Two Towers ?

Don't forget Robin Hood Prince of thieves.

Shooting two arrows seems to be in a few places, and isn't completely insane, but just 'fantasy' enough. Now, three or four seem to break the 'believability' of the system for me personaly.

Its no fantasy to me... I'd rather see them firing faster than jiggling two nocked arrows at the same time. More than 2 is too far even for the imaginative....

It also happens in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, although Costner actually shoots at two different targets by altering the fletchings first...

But that said, I'm no big fan of the feat either. I do have a feat I made up a couple of years ago that I may use as a substitute; I'll go see if I can find it for you. Back in a flash...

Okay, found it:

REFLEX SHOT [General]
Prerequisites: Dex 15+, BAB +6, Point Blank Shot, Rapid Shot.
Benefits: You can make two ranged attacks as a standard action. You suffer penalties of –2 on both attack rolls, as if using the Rapid Shot feat.

Edit: Ah, Ring beat me to the Costner reference while I was looking... ;)

And there are a handful of real-life longbow archers who can perform trick shots w/ 2 arrows, Seen it myself (as Archery is my prime hobby) . Range is limited for good accuracy of course.

I believe that in reponse to "but not once have I seen anyone in fact or fiction do something as stupid as nocking more than 1 arrow.", the movie Robin Hood with Kevin Costner does indeed show him doing this.

...I thought it was a standard action? (checks book) Yep. That's the whole point- fire lotsa arrows and keep moving...

Well, I must have taken away those horrid images of Many Shot in films due to the mental/intelectual trauma inflicted by seeing them. :)

Back to topic thou... Many Shot still seems like an abberation to me.... fantasy or not. Anyone think its balanced ?
