The spiked chain didn't seem to fall neatly into the any of the categories in the chart for sundering weapons.

Thoughts/opinions as to the hardness and hps of the Spiked chain?

p.s.
I don't have a copy of 3.5; I had a half-hour last night to look over a friend's copy.

bleh, no, give it 10hps. I think the spiked chain is too dang effective. I got in a discussion with a member of the group I play in here about how some weapons that "should" seemingly have bonuses to things don't. Like the ranseur not being a trip weapon. He said it was for balance reasons. Well along those lines I think the spiked chain shouldn't have reach, close attack, disarm bonus, be a tripping weapon, and have tons of hps.

Given that when you would hit the thing it would almost always 'give' and flex a little bit I think it would somewhat difficult to get a really good hard hit against it.

I guess I'm leaning towards 10 Hardness with 20 hit points.

edit:
It is also a two-handed weapon and I would think that it should be similiar to other 2-handed weapons.

wow, um, i dunno, that's way too much for me. page 158 phb 3.5, your giving a spiked chain as much resiliance as a metal hafted heavy mace. err, k. I'd certainly put it no higher than a greatsword at 10/10.

the old adage a chain is only as strong as its weakest link rings true to my ear in this debate. But if you want that for your campaign, by all means. I'd just expect a lot of spiked chain users.

edit: btw, masterwork manacles have 10/10. Btw, do you play a spiked chain weilding fighter?

Spiked chains are crazy effective, too effective if you ask me. We practically dont allow them in our campaigns unless you have a very good reason for knowing how to use one.

Not to get too realistic but "sundering" a spiked chain shouldnt take more than slicing through any 1 part of it. I would give it the "light hafted weapon" rules for sundering it.
