In which case, the answer is to use the 3.0 version's damage in the Medium column, then either find an existing weapon which does the same damage at Medium size and use it as an example to work out the damage for the Small column, or else refer to the weapon size and damage table near the start of the DMG for conversion.

yeah, i realized that as soon as i sat down to work on it again.

the confusion on my part stemmed from the fact that i haven't done any gaming since 3.0; though i kept my "library" current with all the 3.5 stuff, i haven't had time until recently to fully familiarize myself with the rules changes. when i saw separate damage columns for Small and Medium sizes, i naturally (and quite erroneously) assumed that the newest incarnation of the rules had reassumed 2nd Edition's breakdown of weapon damage by size. which would have sucked.

needless to say, good German beer and game planning don't always go hand in hand.
