[3.5e] Changes to wizard specialisation

Specialist Here, Specialist There

Well EB, I think you have some good points, but your discussion seems to (and this may be an incorrect presumption) apply to single-classed wizards.

The entire multiclass spectrum can provide many reasons to play specialists with more varied lists and especially in the case of certain warrior/wiz builds DCs are not important (as spells are used for buffing). In such cases, banning evocation would not have much effect, and may even be an easy first choice.

Furthermore we will still see Diviners (if not more than before) due to only 1 school needing to be banned. We may see fewer Abjurers, but honestly Ive only ever seen one and it was all based on flavor. Abjurer makes a good mix with cleric with certain opposed schools.

Anyway, I think those are a couple thing to think about.

We might also see some other schools banned for a Mystic Theurge, since the cleric spells can compensate.

I wonder what this rule will do to Red Wizards, which have to drop another school to gain the prestige class.

I would have no problem with this rule if it weren't for Wulf Ratbane. As it is, I'll be keeping his entirely bitchin' specialist rules from HoHF: Elves.

PS

Again, everyone is assuming that no changes to the spell list were made, while the designers have explicitly said they have to balance the classes. One also has to remember that the big three were only BIG because of the relative strength of their spells, not the number of spells in that school. Given that a number of these have been toned down, the relative strength of abjuration and necromancy will probably have increased. The game is balanced with specialist wizards in mind, and i personally think utility has been emphasized to too great a degree by some. Number of spells cast, especially those with a clear tactical benefit, is generally more important that spells known. This change is completly reasonable.
