Legend
I got bored over the weekend and tweaked some bits and pieces I have been working on. I'm thinking of giving the Spartans a shield bash ability that can knock an opponent prone as a bonus action (see shield master feat). Romans have chainmail.

Heh most of them are based on existing MM stuff such as Veterans in the MM.

Persians did hire thousands of Greeks for a reason though.
I wound up discovering tbrough a quick googling that I was slightly wrong. I had thought the GrecoPersian war had occurred before Rome existed. The city was actually a couple hundred years old by that point, so there was indeed some sort of Roman soldier.

I've also been watching through all of Xena recently, and have been highly amused that she has lived through both the fall of Troy and the fall of Caesar (And the fall of Lucifer!)

I never got into Xena, some of my players in the 90's did though. We had 3 female players and one of them was very pro Xena as she could relate to her I suppose.

The Roman army at the time fought in a Greek style hoplite phalanx though. It was only 150 years later that the famous manipular system was introduced.

Watching Xena back then is what got me back into D&D. And it still feels to me like the ultimate D&D tv show. It epitomizes what the game should feel like in it's ridiculous plotlines peppered with entertaining fight scenes, its complete indifference to historical accuracy in service to delivering what is fun.

So Caesar is Xena's nemesis (because she needs a new one after letting her first one die). Helen of Troy is need of her help. Xena visits China, multiclasses into monk, and battles a witch, wuxia style. She also travels North and gains the valkyrie prestige class. Etc.

The point is, it's ridiculous. It mashes up timelines, it blends genres, it draws inspiration from anywhere the writers think might be fun and it rolls with it. And there's always lots of fighting.

Oh, and a couple musical episodes.

What would people think about a tweak where hoplites get a bonus action shove ability and Romans get an 1st strike type reaction a'la part of the Polearm master feat?
