The unified spell progression works by assigning each class a base magic bonus and then comparing that base magic bonus to a single spell progression chart. A Wiz6, a Clr6, and a Wiz3/Clr3 all have a base magic bonus of +6. Each of these characters has exactly the same base spell slot allocation (the unified progression is based on the Wizard progression so I suppose it would be 3/2/2 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level spells-- off the top of my head). The base magic bonus concept can be seen in Unearthed Arcana.

The table indicates the number of spell slots and ready spells that the character receives. Each rest period, the spellcaster prepares his ready spells: that is, those spells from his class spell list that the caster wants to have access to. There is no need to ready multiple "copies" of the same spell-- for example, if you ready magic missile, you can cast it as many times as you want, provided you have the spell slots to do so. The ready spell mechanic can be seen in Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed.

If you are a cleric 1/Wizard 8 then you have 5th level spells. Does this mean that the 5th level spells can come from either spell list? Or do you unify all of the spells into a single list?

The way I understand it...your total magic bonus tells you the caster level. But...each classes magic bonus tells you the maximum spell level you can have in that class. You can cast a spell level no higher than your magic bonus in that class.

So in your example, your magic bonus total is +9...meaning you have a caster level of 9 and can theoretically cast 5th level spells.

Your cleric magic bonus is +1...meaning you can only cast 1st level cleric spells.

Your wizard magic bonus is +8, meaning you can cast 8th level wizard spells. Of course in this case, you caster level will lower that back to 5th level spells.

If you gain a level of cleric (cleric 2/wizard 8), you now have a total magic bonus (aka caster level) of 10. You now have a cleric magic bonus of +2, so you can cast 2nd level cleric spells.

I see. Very multi-class friendly, it is. It also removes a lot of the need for prestige classes (which is good) but makes a ranger/wizard >> fighter/wizard!!

Would this be a good place to ask specific questions about the rules, or would it be more appropriate to use the Bax Axe hosted forum?

Back out the wizard component and you're really comparing ranger to fighter, which is a matter of taste.

The ranger will certainly be looking longingly at the fighter's Expert Weapon Proficiency.

I'll ask one here. Is there a particular reason one NPC service is separated from the others to the end of the sentence on page ten, paragraph five, aside from its usual pairing with a previously mentioned consumable? A simple "yes" or "no" will do, sir. Thank you. I will sit and wait for my answer.

Yeah, lets keep the questions here. I am a bit curious about Trailblazer. What was the change done to low-light contra darkvision that made it so much easier on DM's?
