Opinion

(on both our parts)

Sorry, I should have typed "Edited: Misread".

I thought you had said that there were a number of PUBLISHERS who had grave doubts about 4e, and I asked for some links, since I hadn't seen any.

I then realized I had misread you and you were saying many FANS had misgivings, which I have seen and read, so there was no need for my post. :)

Anyhoo... as for publishers supporting 4e, I think most will definitely shift to supporting it at launch. People with the new edition will be hungry for material to support it out of the gate and experience tells me that most people will upgrade.

Once the "new" has worn off, that's probably the time that you'll see people looking back.

Think about when OSRIC and C&C showed up... relatively late in 3e's "life".

So that would be my guess. Most publishers will support 4e, then over time, some will decide they prefer (or there's a market they can serve for) the older rules, whether that's 3.5, 3.0, OSRIC or what have you.

Yeah I don't see too many publishers looking back, at least not right away. In fact I don't see very many publishers supporting 3.5 at all is the long haul. The reason that there is OSRIC and C&C is that it grabs the "nostalgia” support. I don’t think that there will be the nostalgia feel for 3.5 like there will be for 1e. Look at 2e, I know that there are groups who happily play it, however I don’t know of any publisher who is producing new material for it.

Dual stating is an option, but that takes up book space. Space which could be devoted to other things.

Agreed. To me, all it suggests is that Paizo's default setting won't adapt the various outsider/planes-based changes as the 4E core. It says nothing about the company moving to 4E or not.

Agreed as well. I don’t understand why someone would think that creating a new 'core' world with its own cosmology would have some type of impact on another world with its own cosmology. Just because the new ‘core’ world has things setup one way changes nothing for Greyhawk, FR, or Eberron. Nothing. At all.

What this WILL do is allow Paizo to release a ‘Gods and Devils’ book for Pathfinder… which would rock…

I've already preordered their monster fluff book. I'd preorder a Pathfinder Chronicles Gods, Demigods and Devils book (or whatever) the moment they announce it.

if 4e didn't have a ogl, i could see 3.5 holding out for a very long time. But with a ogl for 4e, i highly doubt their will be a 3.5 following. At least not nearly as large as if 4e dident have a ogl.

Im assuming ogl 4e is the same as 3.5. if its too hard to work with, 3.5 could stick around for a while.

Green Ronin has True20. I'm not sure if they will continue with D&D products after 4th edition.

Mongoose has switched to RuneQuest (and now Traveller). Goodman Games will support both 4th edition and Castles and Crusades (and I imagine they will continue producing a few 1rst edition modules here and there). Necromancer Games is definitely supporting 4th edition.

Paizo staff said that if they switch to 4th edition (and they are still on the fence, so to speak) they will support 3.5 conversions (and Castles and Crusades conversions) likely on their website or as PDF.

I don't know about the PDF only publishers, but I don't imagine it would be too hard to produce both 3.5 and 4th edition products. If they get enough 3.5 sales it might justify supporting that system exclusively.
