3rd Party Minis

What if a third party company other than WotC were to produce minis? They couldn't have the same name but what if they just gave their line of minis a different name but gave them the same stats as the official minis? Would this be illegal? is anyone already doing it? I don't play the game but it would be interesting to see different companys producing different minis sets, maybe with new abiltieis or common themes.

Well, I doubt another company would, as apparently it costs a lot to make plastic minis. (In bulk, they're cheaper, but they're harder to make than metal ones).

But I could see another company perhaps coming out with stat cards. While the D&D miniature rules are not open content, the stuff it's based on is. There is probably a large enough grey area that it would be possible.

(They couldn't advertise them for use with the game, though. One of the restrictions of the OGL is that you can't mention trademarked names for purposes of compatibility)
