400 Reviews eh?

In terms of doing the review:

Part of it depends on my system knowledge of it and how often I've used it in game play. I'm not always on though. My love for Mercenaries for example, especially since I was reading Black Company and watching the anime Berserk, probably caused me to give Mercenaries Born of Blood a higher rating that it was due.

Anyone looking at the chronology of reviews for Mutants & Masterminds may note that I'm one of the last staff reviewers to hit it. I waited until I had several games under my belt and generated a character and went through the system to see how it was.

And I'm not the fastest reviewer by far. I've got several books, mostly settings, that haven't been reviewed 'formally' because I have to go back and see what I've used from them or how they've played out. Take Testament. Great book overall but I haven't really found too much actual use for it. Same thing with Everstone. Some interesting ideas and concepts there, especially using the BEMS d20 rule set.

That's one of the reasons I like books like Sandstorm. They're quick to integrate into the campaign. One of my friends brought his copy over and I snagged it while GMing a group in the Great Grey Land of Thar in the FR setting and unleashed some variant trolls, crocsphinx, and a tiefling explorer with exotic weapons on the group. Crunch is easy to throw into a campaign, while background has to be added a little more slowly.

In terms of getting your own reviews done, reading the material and talking about what you like is always good. I try to up front about my preferences. For example, art. I love good art. I also don't like wasted space. Many White Wolf books, especially in the SL line, really suffered in that department, especially towards the end of the run and even other books, like Adventure d20, look like they could've been tightened up. I also like a good layout that's easy on the eyes, especially as I get older. Some say content is king but I say this isn't the 80's anymore. Take Redhurst, Denizens of Avandu or BESM d20 deluxe edition. I haven't used any of them to death, but they are some of my favorite books.

Well, that's enough ranting for now. Back to the boards.

Thanks for all your work. Your reviews have certainly saved me a lot of money, as well as lead me to some great finds.

Out of curiosity....

How many were pdfs vs. hard copy?
How many did you acquire your own copy of (bought or comp'ed)?
How many of those have you kept?
Where do you keep all this stuff?

The sheer volume has me boggled.

I don't keep track of the PDF vs hardcopy. I know that I still try to review PDFs when I have time like the recent Legendary Weapons by the Game Mechanics, and I have Legends of the Samurai in my pritned pile, and several Ronin Arts books that I recently reviewed (Demi Planes and Planar Factions I believe)

As far as purchased vs free. Most are freebies. I used to just do the purchased thing when I was freelancing for Shadis and Pyramid online but I received flat fee payments for those reviews. There's a good side and bad side to getting free material. The good side is that I get a lot of free material. The bad side is I'm not always timely when I review it or it's not my style. I know that I lost goods from Fast Forward, Bastion, and a few others due to slow reviews or the dreaded average rating. The slow reviews is my bad. When I get something that doesn't strike me, I either have to review it right away or wait for it to hit the top of the pile again. This has effected me with doing reviews for other sites for provided products like d20 Magazine Rack. Steeve is a great guy but I felt terrible when some of my reviews were waiting past 30 days so I eventually sent the books I hadn't reviewed to another member on the staff for handling.

The other bad thing is that because I have so much material, I don't contact as many publishers as I used to. For example, with my friends playing HARP now, I'm tempted to ask for review copies from our local HARP master here, but due to the backlog, it'd take at least 30-90 days before I had some serious reviews of it done. Heck, when I was doing stuff for Gaming Frontiers, I had the whole line of Spycraft and Shadowforce Archer and I had to send it to someone else because I just didn't have time to playtest it or run any games with it. AEG was awesomely cool in offering me a copy of Stargate but once again, due to time restraints, I didn't take 'em up on it.

When I buy something that's either got a lot of hype or that is useful, I try to add some reviews of it like Troll Lord's Book of Names or Arms & Armor 3.5 just so that 'my spin' is out there. On the opposite side, I also like other types of games so when I bought Gloom, a card game by Atlas, I reviewed that for RPG.net just so that other people could get an idea of what it's like. Short version: Good but terrible printing.

I've kept most of them. I have three bookshelves in my bedroom, two more in the living room, and a bunch of stuff at a few friend's hosues. When I moved from a 3 bedroom to a 2 bedroom with a much smaller dining room, I just didn't physically have the room to keep the stuff. Some of my older material I've finally been getting rid of as well. For example, Games Plus just had their auction and I got rid of like 200+ items. I've also been following some of the 'market' trends and when I see something go for dollars like the Witch Fire trilogy, I e-bay it to help pay for little things here and there. I'd rather keep 'em, but the bills got to be paid!

Nice job, Joe. I found several of your reviews helpful in the past, and hope you continue as much as possible with minimal detriment to your mental instabi...errr stability.

Wow. 400 reviews! I just hit... 2. But I have 3 others started, I should probably work on finishing them up.
Nice work Joe. I know I always check the reviews before buying a book, and yours have been very helpful to me over the past few years.

I like reading other reviews too so if you've thought about it, get going.

Psion and I tend to have some similiar interest so I'm always interested in his stuff and John Cooper, man I wish I had his eye for game mechanics and spelling errors. I wish that Mongoose was still sending him stuff. He's saved me quite a few bones along the way.
