I saw the report on MSNBC yesterday. The head alone is huge.

Now, given that snakes that size are hard to measure, he could be anywhere between 45 to 50 feet in length. I suspect more like 45 feet, since we do tend to stretch them out when measuring the animals. Even so, he would still be the largest snake in the world.

It does give hope to finding the legendary 50 foot anaconda someday.

Edit: Now if that's the dire python, what's the legendary version like?

Hey, it is now not as long as it once was! The question; is it the same snake?

“I have no idea why the snake has shrunk,” said one keeper when asked about the discrepancy, as the snake lounged on a tree branch inside its cage.

...word of the huge snake in Kendal has spread, tripling the number of visitors to the state-run park, normally known just for its scenery and waterfalls.

Hmmm.... Methinks the zookeepers are not so dumb as they pretend.... ;)

sunnuva-- I am an amateur herpetologist and even go so far as to drive lonely Texas roads on warm Spring nights looking for my particular favorites. I used to work in a Reptile store as well. All I can say is I never imagined a snake that big. Ever. Even in my wildest dreams. Apparently, however, the zookeepers did imagine it.

Interesting useless trivia from a fellow geek: Reticulated Pythons are the biggest non-venomous snakes on Earth, the biggest venomous snake is the good old King Cobra. Oh, and the tenth longest snake in the world can (rarely) be found in Texas, the Indigo snake.
