I loved both Baldur's Gate games as well as the first NWN, but I want to see more games like Planescape: Torment. That was an awesome freakin' CRPG.

I'd imagine the a new Baldur's Gate game would be one of the first to come out. Considering the changes in Forgotten Realms have now made it the largest city in Faerun, according to the Countdown to the Realms articles. When comparing the success of the previous Baldur's Gate games and the Neverwinter Nights line to ToEE I'd also imagine that the game will continue as a pauseable, real-time game.

Personally though I'd love to see another turn-based game, though not one based on a previous adventure like Temple of Elemental Evil.

Hmm....it seemed like 3rd edition should have been great for CRPGs too.
It was. Knights of the Old Republic. It just wasn't 3e D$D it was D20 star wars and it was awesome. Also a million seller on Xbox alone. Course the payout wasn't quite as sweet 30-40 dollars a copy isn't 60, cutting the license between Lucas, Bioware, Microsoft and the retailers is a big reason why Bioware started focusing more on creating its own licenses and RPG style game mechanics (Like Jade Empire... which was meh... pretty game, too easy).

Haven't played mass effect yet, but I hear very good things.

Yes, yes. Play Mass Effect. It has a star system named after me!

Sadly, WOTC won't see a dime of it if(when) such a game ever does come to pass.

So, WotC won't see a dime of the money required for a software company to license the D&D property?

...I can't even stress how wrong this is.

I'm glad Torment got a mention.

Baldur's Gate, and its sequels, as we all Torment, are easily some of the best story-lines and gameplay I've seen in an RPG, independant of the system.

NWN, in all its incarnations, was average at best. Story was just.. Meh.

KOTOR 1 and 2 were very good, IMO, for the story department.

But I too would like to raise my hand for the kind of PS3/Live/PC action/story multiperson 4ed style game.

Even one that is done in purchasable models, with an ongoing expandable storyline. With skill challenges and all. Hmm. I am designing in my head, and I like it.

The problem I think is that 4e has a lot of fiddly movement affecting abilities which would likely be a pain to try and use in real time. I think it would be nice if we had an X axis finally however, as it is not as if some other games do not allow you to fly around and such.

Clarifications:
Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II were 2e.
Icewind Dale II was 3e, and decent.

Opinions:
Planescape: Torment is the best crpg of all time. (Followed closely by fallout/fallout 2, and then Baldur's Gate II.)

NWN2 was a disappointment. The story was much better than NWN1, but the amount of creatures available for module building was a huge disappointment.

I really think they need to go back to the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale style and add in a campaign creator. Companies these days spend too much time on flashy graphics when a D&D video game is really most fun because of the story and RP elements.

I'd also REALLY like to see a game like SSI's Stronghold again. It's old enough that abandonware sites have it (not linking - you can probably find a place to buy it). In that game you basically build a fantasy city and your stronghold produces units over time depending on your class. They gain xp up to a certain level just for sitting around (the level goes up when you build training facilities), and they get xp for fighting monsters - which have their own strongholds.

That game could be redone really well nowadays.

As far as movement abilities are concerned, I think those are what the biggest compromises would need to be. As long as everything can be changed to push/pull, it should be fine.

As far as Z-axis movement goes, I hope it gets left out in any game. It's too complicated to build restrictive terrain when flight enters the game.
