D&D 4E 4e and My Game: Some thoughts

My thoughts about conversion - I'd be all for starting at 1st level and let the story explain why. Easy enough since I'm running Night of Dissolution for one group, which includes the idea that magic changes dramatically at the end as one possibility. This isn't such a hard thing to do with 1st level 4e characters being much more capable than 1st level characters in other editions.

Well you have a few options.

1)"New game! Roll up new guys. Yes, some of your preferred options aren't there, but the new races and classes, as well as how abilities function will just make it feel more new and maybe get your creative juices flowing on character concepts."

2)"Take your characters and we'll all sit down and figure out where it feels like these characters would be in the new edition. 1st level in 4E is about 4th in 3E if that helps any."

3)"After saving Ptolus, the Iron Mage shows up on your doorstep and says "Dick Lorant is dead". New 4E characters!"

4)"I'm quitting gaming and taking up knitting."

Personally I like option 3 ;) I hope things work out with your group. Too many people fear change. I hope they can embrace the newness, even if it means just sharing books for awhile.

As far as Necromancer goes, I thought I had seen Clark mentioning something rather like that in one thread or another hear. I'm too lazy to look at all his posts tho ;)

In my college years I had a period of a few months where I was not in school but lived in the same town as all my gamer friends and played in 8 different games throughout the week, plus a LARP. I miss those days ;)

I know not of this "threadcap", only "threadcrap" and I assure you, that's not what you're doing.

Necromancer Games is IN[for 4e], most likely in conjunction with Paizo. We will have products for GenCon or shortly thereafter.

Products include:

2. Advanced Player's Guide: Designed in part by industry insider Ari Marmell, if they left classes and races out, we put them back in (Of course, we can't say if bards or druids or barbarians or gnomes or half-orc are or arent in 4th edition, but we know some stuff has been cut, and whatever is missing we will create for you with work by respected designer Ari Marmell.)

You trusted us to help put the 1E back into 3E, now we are doing the same for 4E!

Viva Necro! And Viva Open Gaming!

The rest of the post is here.

Out of my gaming group I seem to be the only one considering switching to 4th edition. While I dislike a good chunk of what I see previewed, there is a good bit I like, and if the game delivers in terms of easier DM prep that will likely win me over. I'm older now and between work and whatnot I find I don't have the time to dedicate to adventure building as I used too.

For the most part my players are very anti-4th edition, though their reasons are somewhere between 'just because' and 'I don't like change.' I've luckily convinced them to play in a SWSAGA game I'm running, so that should serve as a bit of a preview (though really it seems like a lot of the concepts in SAGA were abandoned in 4th edition D&D), but I count this as a victory as one couple are diehard fanatics of the Star Wars Revised system and I have an extreme dislike for that game.

Another player - my girlfriend - dislikes the idea of switching to 4th ed because it reminds her of the edition change in the WoD games where they basically wiped the slate clean. I certainly understand this, though I find it a bit humorous since she plays a Warblade in my game, I like to tell her she is 'already playing 4th ed.'

Basically if we switch it will be up to me as I'm the guy running the game. If we do I'll likely bear the brunt of the financial burden in books, which is fine. If we do switch, I think we would have to start with new campaigns as the designers suggested. Frankly it will be a year or two before the new edition begins to cover enough bases to be able to switch over a campaign without losing a certain race or class, and I'd rather not have to come up with a stopgap measure which will change again once the 'official' version of the game element comes out. I think it would make sense for anyone switching to the new edition to do so with a new campaign, starting at the bottom would provide a good change to learn the system and prevent endangering existing characters due to an 'oops' moment of interpretation with the new rules.

My gaming group is very excited about 4th Ed, one and all. It sounds like I'm lucky; every one of my players is more than happy to jump across to the new edition and give it a good try. As far as campaign plans go, we'll be finishing our current one very shortly (coinciding with the release), and the show will begin.

I'll be running a fourth Ed game starting at 1st level, and on a different day, a buddy of mine will run a 1st level fourth Ed game with a bit of a different flavour. It will give us both the chance to DM and to play, and it'll give all our players a crash course on different classes and options in 4th.

Personally? I can't wait.
