Without a doubt, those sheets compiled by The Mad Irishman and Mr. Gone are the best free character sheets that I've ever seen.

Considering the [4e / GSL]-Tag, I suppose you mean 4E character sheets. I like Verys Arkon's Character Booklet a lot, simply because it uses less desk space to use.

The best free sheet is: Google Docs. Type up everything in exactly as much detail as you want. You don't need to worry about space wasted on things you don't want, nor do you need to worry about not having enough space for things you do. For example, I like to detail all my numbers like attacks and defenses with exactly where each modifier comes from.

Best part is that since it's online, if you forget your sheets you can just print it out somewhere convenient.

Of course, that's the best free sheet. While the Character Builder's print outs suffer the same problem as any other sheet, the ease of use and calculating everything outweigh the downfalls by several orders of magnitude.
