Looking for players for a new game. Right now the time slot is 7-11 EST on Saturdays, ruleset being 4e. Here is the pitch:
The Breaking of the Old World
Almost a millenniaago, the Eladrin Empire began. Like manycountries, who they were and what they were evolved with time, but in the verybeginning they were a group of elves who broke away from the tribes and traditions, and began to use arcane magic to build a new realm. At first, perhaps, there had been altruismand wisdom in the hands of these so called High Elves; but in time, the natureof their work changed.
Four hundred yearsago, a new empire was chosen; Altoma, a man of vision, of unsurpassed arcanepower, and hidden darkness.
He began theconstruction of the Sky Spire, a massive tower that reached in to the heavens;in speeches and pamphlets, he wrote that the empire was so great that now theycould begin to approach the gods in their heavenly realms above.
Most thought itrhetoric; they were mistaken.
The tower was notjust a dwelling place for arcane minds; it was a weapon, intended to pierce thebarriers between the Mortal and Immortal worlds. Altoma lead a program of collecting as mucharcane power as possible, and began to summon lesser devils to serve him. The magisters and eldritch knights of the oldempire began to make way for the devil binders and dread sorcerers of the new.
The empire wasopposed as it began its final reach to the stars beyond the world. Dragonborn, dwarves, even other elves ralliedtogether as a final battle, as the sky above the tower darkened with magic, seeking to open a portal large enough for their divine patron to becomemanifest in the world.
But the world itselfhad had enough. The reckless use ofmagic, the weakening of the barriers between worlds… The spirits had been fighting the magic, itwas true, but on that fateful day, it was a different spirit that awakened torage and pain.
The World Serpent,half-spirit and half-physical, the will of the world itself made manifest, awoken underneath the ages of the stone and sea that it had slumberedunder. As the Eladrin tore the veilbetween worlds, it was like two dropletsof water touching; the Mortal world and the Immortal world were becoming onearound the portal.
The worlds werecrashing together, and the Mortal World rose up to stop it.
The World Serpentencircled the world a dozen times over; so when it rose, it rose withdestruction. Villages were swallowed upas its coils broke free from the earth, creating great ravines. As the coils erupted from the sea, tidalwaves crashed against the coasts.
Mountains moved andtrembled as the serpent rose up. Fromall across the world, people could see the coils, going a mile in to the air,at times close, at times distant in the horizon, tinged with blue, cutting throughthe clouds.
The head of theWorld Serpent rose up before the Sky Spire; up in to the clouds, whichblackened with its fury and began to rain. All across the world, water began to fall, and thunder crashed in thesky as lightning struck the ground and the immutable scales of the worldserpent.
As the portal in thesky began to open, and a being began to step through, the World Serpentstruck. With the clash of calamity, thegreat spirit blasted in to the tower. The force of primal and arcane magic, of mortal and immortal spiritscrashing, caused the world to tremble, and break.
If the waking of theSerpent was a calamity, the eruption of power and wrath that came from thedestruction of the Sky Spire was the apocalypse. The earth shuddered and shook apart. Water flowed all about, as mountains sank into the sea, and in other places areas long underneath the ocean were forced up.
The world serpentbegan to coil back together, as the sky above the ruins shimmered…
Waking in the New World
Somehow, yousurvived. One moment, you were staringat the horror of the serpent rising up from the depths. The next, you are groggily coming awake on arocky beach. The rain is falling aroundyou, and you taste acrid salt water in the back of your throat. You have managed to cling to one thing, andclutching it, you rise up to see the storm clouds still pouring, and the coilsof the World Serpent in the distance.
So What is the Game About?
This 4e D&D gamewill be about making your way in a broken world. PCs will start off on a rocky island in theaftermath of the cataclysm, which will have changed the face of the earth, andpushed ancient monsters to the surface, freeing them from vaults and exposingnew dungeons to explore of a world long forgotten.
The first fewsessions will focus on survival, as the PCs try to stay alive, and seek outother survivors. The intention is forthe PCs to explore the disheveled new world and ultimately, create somethingstable; once the dangers of monsters, and the concerns of food and shelter aremet.
Cosmology Changes
There are somechanges to the Broken World, from the normal cosmology.
First, there is onlythe Mortal and Immortal worlds; the Immortal world acting as the Astral Sea,with an area that functions as the Abyss.
The Mortal Worldcontains an Elemental Chaos like realm in the center; this is what the WorldSerpent has held sealed away.
There is no trueequivalent for the Feywild and the Shadowfell.
The gods are unableto manifest pure physical forms; they can make Avatars, which are how theyappear to mortals, but they exist in the Immortal Realm in their true form.
Tieflings are new; aTiefling would be someone who survived the cataclysm but got exposed to theImmortal energies of the other world. Their form would be strange to them as well.
Making a Character
All normal charactergeneration rules apply, except for that the PCs start off with only one mundaneitem that they could normally purchase with their starting gold.
At the beginning, the party will all wash up together on a seemingly deserted island. They will have to fight, and gather, andsurvive and try to make it from this island to another.
