D&D 3E/3.5 4e Character in a 3E World

3E and 4E are on totally different scaling when it comes to encounter durations, damage, and healing. A 4E cleric would be a total gimp in a 3E world.

This. 4E characters are stronger in the first couple levels, but 3E characters overtake them rapidly. If I were going to try to estimate the "effective level" of a 4E character in a 3E world, I'd use a formula more or less like this:

3E "effective level" = (4E level + 7) / 2

Or, going the other way:

4E level = (3E "effective level" x 2) - 7

This is based on a) the assumption that a 4E character at level 1 is about as powerful as a 3E character at level 4, and b) the fact that character power in 3E roughly doubles every two levels, but in 4E doubles every four levels.

So, if your 3E party is 12th level, your 4E cleric should be about 17th level. This still doesn't address all the other weirdness - can you use 3E magic items, or are you limited to 4E gear? What happens when you allow a 3E character to use a healing surge, which will happen a lot as a cleric? Do all 3E monsters use straight-up saving throws against your powers, or are some of them considered "elite" or "solo" monsters that get +2 or +5? But it's a start.

I'm not even convinced "effective" levels would really work out, because part of the issue is that the ratios of scaling are different.

Your Hit Points, Attack Bonuses, and defenses just don't go up at the same rate between the 2 systems, so attempting to use "effective levels" is going to mean that one or more of your stats is going to be out of wack.

Honestly, the whole idea just isn't going to work without massive tweaking, like using a level 12 4E cleric with level 12 hit points, but maybe level 16 attack bonus and level 30 powers or something else crazy.

The systems just aren't compatible like that.

Play a 4e warlock.
1 attack per round? check.
at will powers? check.
no expectation to provide others with buffs? check.

Your attack bonus may be a little lower, but touch attacks make this less a problem. Your AC will be great if you can use 3e gear. If he still looks weak make the argument he should be 17th level.

Wow. The threadcrapping in here makes it hard to breath. Where are the mods when you need them?

So how are you adapting the rules to make this work? If you could post some of your adaptations it might make it a little easier to see what you and your DM are trying to do.

Oohh, Mage. I want to see Porthos Fitzempress fight... whoevers the top mage in those parts.

I think any Hermetic would sell his manhood to be ported to DnD. Spell components are easier to find, no paradox. They can nicely go behind their little protection spells and scourge the landscape.

I could almost cry :D.

I welcome my Mage threadjacking overlords ;) I miss Mage like crazy and I've almost completed my collection of Mage 2nd Ed (cuz Revised never happened and don't get me started on the NWoD version). I would have loved to see the freeform magic of Mage somehow soldered on top of D&D heh

I came to Mage with revised, having said that I don't really have a problem with Rev and never understood what people have against it. It seems perfectly useable for me in play. Although I'll agree with you on the monstrosity of nWoD Mage. Yes lets suck all the enjoyment and originality out of Mage and replace an almost infinate amount of paradigms with a spiritual CCG. Trade you two uncommon rotes for your rare one!

We can even start a Mage thread about this :p

By the way what do you think of Mage the Sorcerers Crusade?
