The most recent podcast stated they were working on companion/familiar rules, but it would be a while before we see them because they wanted to get the core of the game out first.

Sounds like we maybe shouldn't expect them in the first PHB then.

They said wizards didn't have familiars, which I took to mean "until we get the rules figured out and balanced, wizards can't have familiars". Putting the wizard's familiar and the ranger and druid's animal companion under a single ruleset is a good idea, and given how hard they are to balance, worth getting right.

I'm torn on the issue.

On the one hand, familiars, and animal companions have become a fantasy stable, and as such we would want dnd to represent them.

On the other hand, they are a b**** to balance. First of all, they double the spotlight time of one player, who now gets to do twice as much. I've been in a party that had a big summoner, and lots of companion type people. Its hard for one guy when he's action takes half a minute, having to wait 20 minutes while the rest of party and their pets go.

I wonder if they will take out the combat aspect of companions in 4e. They will be useful for off combat things, and for roleplaying. They will be survivable enough to survive combat, but won't play a major factor.
