[4e] covaithe's E1: Death's Reach

Well my cat is out of the bag already... Hurt feelings or no, this is my criteria for the sixth PC.

Any character whomsoever helped out with the construction of Domaine de Massacre, has an interesting backstory, and links to Orelal, is a viable candidate as far as I'm concerned.

When it comes down to the final decision, I'll throw my two cents behind whoever’s backstory is more entertaining. Mechanically speaking, I think this group is good enough to make up for anything that may be lacking. Therefore the RP elements are the most important for me.

Especially now that Ren is going Warden.

EDIT: I'm surprised no one is screaming PICK ME! PICK ME! I would be, but I'm shameless... Seriously though, I don't even need the sixth character to be leader, or defender, another striker, or a controller would be ok as well. Just so long as the RP was there, and they have known and helped Massacre.

EDIT 2: L.S. Sarenax and Orelal have been friends since way back as well. I think that Kylek, Sarenax, and Orelal, may have been serving in an army of mostly Dragonborn, in a company of "unusual talent". Orelal's Massacre happened when the company came across the enemy encampment, during the commotion Orelal mentally dominated the commanders, leaving Sarenax and Kylek (and others to be determined later) to quickly and efficiently slaughter the subordinates. The whole battle was over in less than five minutes leaving thousands dead. Survivors didn't remember Sarenax and Kylek, because if someone came face to face with either, they didn't survive. Therefore Orelal recieved much of the credit for the victory, and earned his nickname, Massacre. However stories still tell of a white and black wake of death, leaving a river of blood.

Whatcha think?

I'm certainly still interested, and I've been spending a few minutes here & there tinkering with my build, I just didn't want to spend a lot of time building crunch or writing back-story until I knew if the Bard was going to fit into an open role or not. :)

Oni, I can't think of a particularly good tie-in for Kylek, other than both participating in Orelal's fortification rituals. That will at least mean that the two have met. Also, I find your vision of Kylek very interesting. He has some elements of how I was envisioning Sarenax - like the deep rumbling voice - and some completely opposite - like coloring and temperament. :) Having a pure white dragonborn and a pure black dragonborn makes for an interesting picture, especially since both of them are huge. Kylek more so (I suppose he's allowed to be massive, since he's a demigod ;)), but Sarenax is still really, really big too. For now, at least. I'm thinking as he becomes more Darklordy he'll keep his height and frame, but become leaner, even a little emaciated towards the end.

Well we probably don't have to have each character closely tied with each other character, it's probably enough to have a connection to one or two. Though Kylek played soldier of fortune in the Shadowfell for a while so it could be as simple as that, that's how he met Orelal. The whole visual dichotomy in colouration is one of the factors that pushed me toward my final design. And Anostor makes them both look like midgets.

It's looking like we have no shortage of muscle in the group, though. Kylek and Anostor both have 26 Str (silly ED bonuses), and Sarenax has 24. Depending on what renau builds, we just might have the Mostly Monstrously Muscled Crew :p

I've been quietly chuckling to myself about that myself the last few days. We've got all these muscle bound types and then the world's skinniest eladrin.

Heh got to love sorcerers and their manly muscle magic, cast by posing and flexing. :p

Anyway, comments on the sheet and backstory are welcome.

I enjoyed the episode at the beginning of the backstory, really sets the tone for his personality.

Massacre is smart enough to surround himself with the biggest, meanest, muscle-bound, pillars of might he can find.

I may have Orelal be short for an Eladrin as well, just to increase that dichotomy. Skinny short robe filled with bones, walking in between massive flesh shields. Yup looks comedic to me!:p

I think all of us scanning this thread in hopes of being picked for the final slot are pretty realistic -- You've all been particularly up-front about there only being one wildcard available, so there are no illusions. (Unless you want another wizard, in which case there could be illusions.) If it helps, CaBaNa: "Pick me! Pick me!"; but realistically we all know there are many variables that go into this choice, and you guys want to be sure to pick someone who is in for the haul.

@renau: That sucks. Haven't you updated since the PHB2 content made it into the CB, though? Can't you just start with what you've got, and get stuff from the latest Dragons and EPG later? Just curious, I forget if it lets you use the full CB without updating or not, since I only have the trial version.

Well I got it working, but I was super-stoked about playing a revenant turned into servitor of the Raven Queen... but it's not supported in the CB yet and I know the struggles I have trying to build even a level 1 PC from scratch. I think I'm going to still try it out as I want to use a human as the base race anyways.

Initial Thoughts: The group knew my PC in his previous life, when the human adventurer (warden/... unknwn Paragon) met with the others for whatever adventure they went on together then went on his seperate way. After he left ways with the group the BBEG they thought they'd killed ambushed my PC and he died. This is when he'd come back as a Chosen of the Raven Queen. The other PC's wouldn't know that he's a revenant until they all meet up.

I'm sure Massacre will take comfort in not being the only recently undead character;)

@Kobold Stew:

Thanks for chipping in, you've helped me understand everyone a little better!

On the topic of the sixth: Perhaps Pyrex and KS could give us a hint of what their prospective character's personalities are like? We have a taste of Batin from stonegod already. I think that would make it easier for those of us who are thinking in terms of RP to make an informed decision, as it were. :)

I like it :) The "white and black wake of death" sounds particularly awesome :D

Sounds like renau wants his character in on the company of "unusual talent" as well. What do you think, Oni?

Perhaps the army we fought was led by that Demon King of [some place that started with T] that I made up off the top of my head for Sarenax's backstory. If not (or if covaithe has some idea that would tie into his story better), I definitely don't mind changing the reference in Sarenax's backstory. The first two names on that list (the dragon and the Demon King dude) are basically totally random inventions whose only purpose is to fill out the list with some flavour ;) The death giant does serve a real purpose in the story, so I'll be keeping him at the end.

Heh, and it does sound like ren's going with another musclebound freak, probably a ridiculously tough one at that. Thus, the MMMC was born :p
I enjoyed the episode at the beginning of the backstory, really sets the tone for his personality.
Glad you enjoyed it :) I'm still getting used to writing little narratives like that ... haven't really done any of that kind of writing in a long, long time. It is fun to convey the picture in your head to others, though, and a story can do that much easier than a dry description of personality.

I may have Orelal be short for an Eladrin as well, just to increase that dichotomy. Skinny short robe filled with bones, walking in between massive flesh shields. Yup looks comedic to me!:p
That would look pretty funny. If you wanted to go for a more serious tone and keep the visual dichotomy, a tall super-skinny eladrin lich would still contrast nicely. Now I wish my drawing skills were actually up to drawing people so I could do a group portrait ;)

So, I don't really know much about revenants ... OK, I know nothing about revenants. It sounds like they're sort of a reborn/reanimated humanoid? So you can have human revenants, elf revenants, tiefling revenants, etc...? Also, it'll be interesting to see a primal character with a strong tie to the divine. You thinking of earthstrength or wildblood warden?
Initial Thoughts: The group knew my PC in his previous life, when the human adventurer (warden/... unknwn Paragon) met with the others for whatever adventure they went on together then went on his seperate way. After he left ways with the group the BBEG they thought they'd killed ambushed my PC and he died. This is when he'd come back as a Chosen of the Raven Queen. The other PC's wouldn't know that he's a revenant until they all meet up.
Sounds cool. Would that be part of Massacre's massacre, or a different adventure? The presumed-dead BBEG who still lives makes for a good hook for cov to use later, as well.

Just as an FYI: The more I think about it, the less Batin's ED makes sense for him. He's going to want to be bouncing around the field (he's explicitly designed to do so), so a power that focuses on one target is a bit silly. Plus, it doesn't tie into his master of all places theme. So I'm thinking Planeshaper (from the same Dragon magazine). The Plane in question is not one Batin created, but one he found—the Great Mountain of All Places, former realm of the Subtle Ones. This one place is really One Place for All Places, with connections everywhere.

Its like Sigil, but better. ;)

How do you feel about that ED, covaithe? If you don't pick me, its moot anyway, but I thought you'd want the heads-up.

BTW: If anyone hasn't caught it (I've been subtle ;), Batin's whole concept is a shout-out/homage to the Ahi-i-Batin from Mage: The Ascension.
