D&D 4E [4e] Energy Specialization Feat Template

tleilaxu

First Post
There are four feats in the 4e PHB that give a +1 damage bonus to two different damage types:

-astral fire (radiant fire),
-burning blizzard (acid cold),
-dark fury (necrotic psychic), and
-raging storm (thunder lightning)

Each of these feats requires a 13 in two different stats, but beyond that are identical. In addition, although some damage type marriages (such as raging storm) make sense, obviously burning blizzard was a shotgun-style affair. In any case, I've decided to save Wizards (and all the rest of us) the great bother of listing out a feat for each and every single combination between these damage types (poor force and poison got left out for some reason). Why bother, when it is easy enough to mix and match on your own?

For the crunch minded,I present to you the

4e Energy Specialization Feat Template.

Energy Specialization
(ie, whatever cool title your combo gives you)

+1 feat bonus to damage rolls when using a power that has the [type1] or[type2] keyword.
(At 11th increase to +2; at 21st, +3)

Requirement: [stat1] 13, [stat2] 13

Choose [type1] and [type2] from this list (flavor text):

necrotic (dark)
poison (toxic)
radiant (astral)
thunder (raging)
lightning (storm)
fire (fire)
acid (burning)
cold (blizzard)
psychic (fury)
force (force)

Based on the stat requirements given in the PHB, these are my extrapolated requirements for [stat1] and [stat2]

con: thunder, necrotic
dex: lightning, fire
int : acid(or cold?), poison(or force?)
wis: cold(or acid?), psychic
ch: radiant, force(or poison?)

sample feats using this template:

psychic and radiant "astral fury"
req: 13 wis, 13 cha
+1 feat bonus to all damage rolls when using a power that has the psychic or radiant keyword
(At 11th increase to +2; at 21st, +3)

acid and poison "burning toxin"
req: 13 int, 13 (wis or cha)
+1 feat bonus to all damage rolls when using a power that has the acid or poison keyword
(At 11th increase to +2; at 21st, +3)

this doesn't make sense to anyone else?

i personally would rather just have a feat that says "pick two damage types, you get +1 damage to those types" than have Wizards post 50+ versions of various energy combinations.

There's no reason to say Fire = Dex and not Cha -- Hellfire Blood goes to a race with a Cha bonus, after all; and to further confuse the issue, the Radiant at-wills are Strength and Con based.

Honestly I'd just use Weapon Focus as the template, and grant +1/2/3 damage to powers with a single energy keyword, with no prerequisites on the feat. Half the power, infinite times more convenience and customization potential.

Cheers, -- N

Another option might be to use Implement Focus, and give +1/+2/+3 when using the specified implement - a closer analog to the fighter situation.

This. Congrats, Plane Sailing and Nifft, I've just adopted these as a house rules!

I am totally doing this in my games.
