Short list is definitely a feature, not a bug, IMO.

I disagree. A common shovel has been an essential piece of adventuring gear for as long as I’ve been playing and running D&D.

We have. If you have realistic traps that you, the DM, actually understand the workings of (as was common in the olden days), rather than just having some mechanics for, it's a perfectly reasonable investigative tool.

I remember some lengthy and hilarious discussions on the "physics of evil" and whether wood "conducted evil" and/or if metal did when a 10' pole was used to prod a particularly cursed artifact.

Also, dude, if you're seriously trying to say that 10' poles aren't a part of D&D, you can take your coat with it's giant "3E" on the back and go home.
