4E & Gygax

He did at least some work on Cyborg Commando, didn't he?

Hmm, Wikipedia says Kim Mohan & Frank Mentzer designed it based on a Gygaxian outline.

Cyborg Commando came between AD&D and DJ.

"As for the Cyborg Commando RPG, it was designed by Frank Mentzer and Kim Mohan based on my outline, it being the initial part of a three-part SF RPG. As I was then immersed in writing the last five Gord the Rogue novels so as to have product for NIPI to sell and generate income, I could not spend any real design time on the CC RPG and I know it suffered thus. The best selling NIPI products were my novels. The other game products did marginally well, as did the other novels NIPI published. What was really needed was the major new RPG system I was developing slowly because of the novel writing. That pretty well sums up the NIPI fiasco, for that is the most apt description I can think of for the whole matter." - Gary Gygax in this interview

Cheers!

Just as an FYI,

After the DJ settlement resulted in EGG abandoning the game, he was working on several treatments for computer games. The big one, Hunters of Ralk, was cancelled. (It was going to be science fantasy).

Gary had a few game designs that he was figuring out what to do with. One was called Elder Worlds, another Lejendary Adventures. A few of these ended up appearing on his short-lived web site. Lejendary Adventures was the one he chose to be his next project, and the one he eventually committed to. (IIRC somebody was working to convert the Elder Worlds setting to LA format).

I remember the science-fantasy follow-up to LA. IIRC, it was called Lejendary Asterogues and was available in draft format on Gary's site at one time.

Over the Easter weekend, the subject of 4E came up in a conversation with one of my cousins. According to the sources he normally gets his information from, he was adamant in stating that the manuscript for 4E had been penned by Gary Gygax himself.

I'm very skeptical of this; from my understanding, Gygax was working on his own line through lejendary journeys and though initially praising 3E at its release, had turned his back on D&D's development, washing his hands of anything to do with the system.

Can anyone confirm or deny my cousin's claim that 4E (at least initially) was penned by Gygax?

*muffled giggle*

LOL

LMAO

ROFL

This is right up there with people insisting they have WoW characters that are level 100.

As everyone pointed out, this is just nonsense. However, the 4E PHB is dedicated to Gygax. Which might have been how this idea got started.
Incidentally, I recall Rouse's post here on ENW in reply to someone suggesting that 4E be dedicated to EGG. IIRC, he simply wrote "Done." Not sure if the suggestion made here actually had anything to do with it or not.
