D&D 4E 4E in 2008? Fact or Fiction?

If I recall clearly, revisions are usually announced about 6-12 months prior to release, so I'm guessing we'll know if 2006 is going to happen by the end of this year.

I *really* don't want a revision next year.

Actually, I don't ever want to see one. I have too much left to explore in v3.5 to even think about learning new rules yet.

I think I've found the edition I'm going to stick with, much as diaglo found his in 1974. I have hundreds of dollars' worth of 3E products, which is hundreds of dollars more than I've ever spent on previous editions of the game. I can't imagine, at this point, ever switching editions again. 4E would have to be as revolutionary, as ground-breaking, as sacred-cow-shattering, and as distinct from previous editions as 3E is to entice me to buy, and I just don't see it happening.

I wouldn't be surprised at 2008 being the next time for an edition. We have the books on the classes, specialized monster books, books on different environments, books on the deities, campaign settings, campaign setting regions, multiple monster manuals, and many more published by WotC. Actually, I could even see them pushing for 2006, it just makes sense from a business point of view. There's not a ton more that they can do that doesn't have to be a new idea, the market for d20 is more competitive than from 2nd to 3rd, and they seem to be the leaders as many products are based 3rd edition thanks to OGL. So why not make a new edition, and then put out all the "new" class books, monster books, etc?

The only book I'd like to see a new revision of would be the PHB. At that really only to finish the spell revisions they started in 3.5 (and some they changed which ended up worse - i.e. Blasphemy) all the way to the highest level spells.

Still hoping that Spell Encyclopedia ends up being PHB 3.6 in the spell department.

Everything else we change in our game is just flavor and tone.

Most of the mechanics are in the PHB anyway. It wouldn't be surprising to have folks switch to the 4.0 PHB and then stick with all the 3.5 for the rest.

But if the goal is to sell everyone all the books again it would need to be more radical in the changes and I think our group would pass on that totally.

2008? Too soon!

3e was released in 2000? Or 2001? It does not seem so long ago, and 2008 is a fair bit closer than either of those dates... Anyway, it would be mighty nice if they could up with some better way to revive D&D than *another* new edition. I mean, if we want some new ideas, why don't they try a new formula, instead of just repeating the old one? I don't think that I would spend any money on 4e books I already have the 3e versions of, unless they fluff was *really* exceptional. Especially if there was no SRD or Open Gaming in the new edition.

I just have this gut feeling that it's going to be announced at GenCon. I'm hoping I'm wrong. Especially since I really expect 4e to be the end of the D20 license -- I can't see WotC keeping that around for a new edition.
