Corrected now. It's still L1-3 in the starter set as far as I am aware.
In Bill Slavicsek's latest Ampersand article it looks like this is back to just two levels:

Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Roleplaying Game. This essential boxed set contains everything you need for a group of players to start playing the Dungeons & Dragons game. It contains game rules, dice, maps, tokens, and an adventure that takes characters from 1st to 2nd level.

I note that the current catalog entry for the red box doesn't list the number of levels it supports.

Thanks for the post, I am hoping that they are just describing the module that goes from L1-2 and the character information is still 1-3... BUt you might be right... It could be back to L1-2.

For those who cant see the link, here is the updated info we have. Next week he'll be back with more info on Essentials.

Dungeons & Dragons Essentials
The action takes place mostly in your imagination, but you need a few things to play the Dungeons & Dragons game. These Essential Products form the foundation of the roleplaying game line moving forward, providing a starting point for new players and new material for longtime players. These products debut in September and roll out through October, November, and December.

Essential Products for Players and DMs

•Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Roleplaying Game. This essential boxed set contains everything you need for a group of players to start playing the Dungeons & Dragons game. It contains game rules, dice, maps, tokens, and an adventure that takes characters from 1st to 2nd level.
•Dungeons & Dragons Rules Compendium. This comprehensive book contains the essential rules of the game collected in one place, taking a campaign from 1st to 30th level.
•Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Dice. The Dungeons & Dragons game and other games using the D&D Game System require a special set of dice. Pick up extra sets of dice so that every player has a set.

•Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms. Create and play druids, paladins, rangers, and warlocks.
These player books feature the essential elements of the game from a player's point of view. Look for more details as we roll out our previews throughout the months of July, August, and September.

So does the "Essentials" line indicate that they will be stopping the Player's Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guides?

The Essentials line does not indicate this but from what we have seen I would think that PHB's and DMG's are dead for now. With the Shadow Power Source book coming out in March when the PHB 4 would normally come out I think this is how we will see Power sources released instead of in PHB's

As far as I've been able to tell from what they've said, much of the feat and power material will be new. However, none of it will be needed by existing players. The hardcover book rules will suit them still just fine. That being said, I belief the info from the Essentials line will appear in the Character Builder, so players old and new can use it all if they so choose.ndium will show them how to play. And by making it a smaller, cheaper softcover, existing players might decide to pick it up too. Simple as that.

If there are going to be new feats and powers, why wouldnt existing players "need" or want to use them ?

If the monster vault is of the quality of MM3 in both mechanics, creature selection and in fluff then I will be a very happy DM.

I think so. I'd go so far as to guess they'll stop production of the PHB, MM, and DMG. The Essentials are intended to be "evergreen," and that's frankly a ton of redundancy.

knight class?

Currently the d&d insider July Calendar mentions a preview of the "Knight" class from the essentials line. I figured this was a mistake but the ToC from this month's Dragon specifically states that the article will be a preview of the Knight.

My guess is that they meant fighter since the other previews are for the wizard, cleric, and rogue, i.e. the other classes in the first essentials book. Then again, maybe they are renaming the fighter or re-imagining the paladin.

What do people think?

Maybe Knight is the name of the new Fighter Build? Maybe a lots of armour defence specialist who gets Plate Armour (As it may seem odd to include an armour no one can use).
