They already mentioned that the "Magic Item Compendium taught [them] to look at magic items more wholistically." I think this was in reference to the many magical items in the books that enhance class features instead of giving flat out bonuses.
Eternal Wands, Runestaves, Set items that allow longer durations on class abilities.
I bet we're going to see something similar with the wizard items (orb, staff, wand and tome) as well as the items for all the classes.
+6 staff.. maybe not. I'm thinking something like "With this wand you can use a fire attack instead of a wizard strike" or "Mage armor lasts an additional three rounds" Stuff like that.
