D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

What exactly about moving succubus to devils makes them incapable of what they were before?

Serving a chaotic god of evil and destruction? I suppose that might not be a problem for some people. But my campaign would be a trainwreck if I tried to reboot it to 4e... one of the NPCs is one of a handful of tieflings on the whole plane, my CE elder evil had a succubus for an emissary, the party's halfling recovered the legendary arms and armor of a gnome paladin, frost giants were battled, and there is no Feywild (IMC, the fey's origin is the primordial Material Plane). Several spellcasting NPCs are capable of shapeshifters, and impersonation has been a common theme.

So yeah, a lone succubus, not a big deal. But if you want to have succubi and demons running together, that's an issue.

Vocal message board critics have a way of making their concerns seem incredibly significant far out of proportion to reality.

4e detractors have had the opposite effect on me. I find their criticisms increasingly irrational and irrelevant. And when my standards of good game design are held up to 3.5, I find that game's flaws and failings ever more impossible to ignore.

Amen, brother.

How does a succubus serve a CHAOTIC god of destruction and evil. I would've thought seduction would be too long term and planned for chaotic demons

Because the ability to think before the immediate situation and plan is far more a function of mental stats and skills than alignment?

Based on the released 4e fluff so far, a succubus could be working for a chaotic lord as a hired gun.

Basically, pawsplay is just saying that he doesn't like the new cosmology, and prefers to stay with that one that was created in prior editions. As if people were forcing him to play with the new assumed default, or he would get shot. I mean, the new cosmology is just a proposal, as was the older one, and most D&D-GMs made their own cosmology up anyway. Heck, Eberron as an example has all its own planes of existance, with no Abyss-/Nine Hells of Baator-mumbo jumbo at all.
Besides, the way it seems, Devils are rather Evil instead of being Lawful Evil. Noticed that the Alignment is only written as Evil?
The 4th edition Succubus could easily work for a Chaotic Evil God of Destruction and Chaos. Devils aren't inherently opposed to those with Chaos in their Alignment. Heck, they're not even opposed to Demons anymore, as there's no Blood War to ruin the relationship between Devils and Demons.
The only difference between Devils and Demons is that Demons are (according to Worlds & Monsters) a bunch of insane forces of the elements, whereas the Devils are team-playing jerks from the Astral Dominions. And that's it. They can actually quite well work together, as long as the demons are capable to withhold their killing urge. One kind of demon even became devils only due to a contract, the Ice Devils, who are now some kind of Yugoloth-oid demon race under contract for Mephistopheles. Proof that demons and devils can work together somehow.

All I can say is: If the Succubus becoming a Devil has a negative impact on your current campaign, by all means keep it a Demon. I mean seriously, the D&D mafia isn't going to show up at your house and break your legs, or revoke your membership card or anything. I've been ignoring all that stupid Blood War stuff for ages in regards to Devils and Demons, and not once have I even gotten an angry glare. I'm pretty sure you'll be ok.

Okay, if you say that... *stops writing his application for the job as WotC hitman*

Well, we'll have to fix that now, won't we?
