As other people have stated, taking arcane initiate is not required at all to be able to cast rituals.
You have to be trained in either Arcana or Religion, which then qualifies you for the Ritual Caster feat.
Yes the multi class feats are (mechanically) better than straight skill training, but remember you can only take one multi class feat
