If we choose a starting point where we (I think I will be an alternate, too) have no starting gear, dex/int based builds (not armor dependent) and non-weapon user classes (not weapon dependent) will start with a big head start.

Which part?

"now we are obliged to work together to first get out of whatever predicament we are in, and then to bring down the crime boss"

Does that really matter?

Before the first fight, the PC melee types can probably grab one or two handed improvised weapons and midway through the first fight (at least against humanoids), they can start picking up daggers or swords or clubs or whatever. Afterwards, they might be able to wear stinky leather armor or some such.

It'll be a once in a lifetime occurance where some of the PC spell casters have ACs of 14 and the non-spell casters have ACs of 10 through 12 for an encounter or two. This would also be a good opportunity for a Rogue to shine once he gets his hands on a dagger and possibly some old smelly armor.

I don't object to playing with little/no gear, provided Sparky compensates for this somewhat. I kind of like the idea of (temporarily) actually having a reason to care about the mundane weapons / armor some enemies carry.

I'm all for being tossed into a crypt re: lotuseater's plan.

@Walking Dad, you're not an alternate, you're in the group proper.

-------

One vote for orphans of war, two votes for being chucked into a crypt, two votes for a vindictive crime boss. Okay, things are starting to take shape.

There's a war that has created orphans (as wars are wont to do).
There's a 'crime boss.'
There's a crypt.

All right. I'll think about the crime boss for a bit and start to put some flesh on the game world. Don't post any concepts yet, I'm not yet sure if I want you guys to know explicitly what the other players are playing.

-------

Answer the following:
What sorts of regions and cultures are you guys interested in?

Related: What real world or fictional places or peoples do you want to see flavoring the campaign world?

What are your favorite monsters? Why?

What are your least favorite monsters? Why?

I would love to play a campaign with ______________________.

funnily enough, i had not really though through the implications of my idea. i was not advocating we start with nothing. i was just looking for a way to give us a common enemy, and a reason to be adventuring together. not that we would be running around naked using chair legs as weapons for the first 3 levels. hopefully sparky will be kind.

answers to your questions:

1) i like campaigns that at least originate in city settings. i prefer to stay away from a setting that is too narrow (ie, always in the jungle, always on board a ship)

2) nothing specific in terms of what i want to see flavoring the campaign. if we are going with the crime boss idea, it might have a noirish tone to it.

3) my favorite monsters are dragons. they are iconic.

4) my least favorite monster? i'll say this. i really really do not like psionics, as pc's or as monsters. it doesn't feel like high fantasy to me. it's something else. (in my opinion anyway)

so those are my personal views, but i would love to play a campaign that sparky has thought out and built according to his own vision.

Yeah, gotta say I like the idea of the PCs starting in a crypt.

As for a crime lord, that's ok. So is a corrupt politician or merchant or whatever it is that threw us into the crypt. It could just be a monster.

1) I like small town settings with nearby dungeons. I don't like cities cause they are too big and I forget the bizillion NPCs that I meet. I prefer the same one or two dozen NPCs that are more fleshed out so that I can relate to them and remember them. As the PCs get higher level, I prefer to stay in the same town, but take trips to places further and further away, but eventually returning back to the original town (which I consider a home base).

2) I think exotic places are neat: hanging gardens, massive cliffs / canyons, etc.

3) I too like Dragons. Not every day, but definitely a reoccurring theme.

4) I'm not too keen on oozes, slimes, swarms, etc. Well, I guess they're ok if they only attack the Fighter.
