D&D 4E 4E Sample Combat: The Terrasque

Is the Tarrasque a Level 30 Solo? Then it shouldn't be too hard for a party of 5 level 30s, if I understand the basic encounter notions correctly.

If the Tarrasque is one of those "they all die except for one who has only 2hp left when he finally slays the Tarrasque" encounters then I suppose you need to pop it on them before they become level 30 demigods.

Of course, the Elf of the North Star could probably one-shot that chump anyway! :)

Could someone explain what was penalizing the big T's saves?
The wizard blood mage power Destructive Salutation was the save to end stun power that T failed to save against multiple times. The wizard apparently had spell focus which makes his effects -2 to save against. Plus the rogue used his "you fumble" power to make sure he failed in the second round.

Failing 5 saves in a row, when you just need a 7 to save, is a fluke - it's a 0.53% chance of that happening. Not that it doesn't happen, of course, flukes happen, but it was a fluke.

...or you could just bump it up several levels, giving it another hundred hp or so, higher defenses(which would've caused several misses), etc.

A 30 level solo isn't a good encounter against 4 level 30 PCs? What is the surprise? Tarrasque should be fought at level 25
Actually it's right on. Tarrasque is a 95,000 XP Solo Brute. 4 PCs at level 30 are only budgeted 76,000 XP. 5 PCs bumps it to an equal challenge at 95,000 XP.

Even though a solo monster is big and tough, several sample encounters include extra creatures with a solo. Orcus himself is accompanied by 2 atropals (lvl 28 elite controllers) and 8 lich vestiges (lvl 26 minion). Also consider the other encounters that likely preceded this climatic battle. I don't think there will be a shortage of challenges in 4e.
