D&D 4E 4E Sample Combat: The Terrasque

The Tarrasque has a +5 to saving throws. Basically, it only misses 20% of its save. The next step would be to have it suceed automatically.
The problem doesn't seem to be saving against most things, but rather stun effect specifically. I could see automatically downgrading all stun effects to daze effect on Mr. T to keep him from being completely locked down like this.

Regen might have helped, but I think it would seriously unbalance things in a normal scenario. Even without the Terrasque moving and attacking (and thus requiring resources be relocated to deal with that), it still took seven rounds of concentrated bitch-slapping to bring him down. Also, his saving throw bonus is plenty big; he would have saved early on but for the Rogue's ability to turn a succesful roll into a critical failure. After that, the Terrasque just got crappy rolls. He did manage to save at the end of the sixth round, but was already down to 100 HP, and so died.

Round 4
Darjin switches to basic attacks here; one of her attacks is a response, the rest would give advantages that are entirely unnecessary against a stunned opponent. So Sly Flourish hit for 43+29-10=62 damage, and she sustained the flurry.

Ironboot used Cruel Reaper, hit for 35-10=25 damage, shifted 2N, repeated the attack for a miss.

HP moved 4NE, sustained Doom of Delban, missed, took 8 damage (177 HP), and did 49/2+5-10=19 damage.

Ea cast Chain Lighting, took 9 damage (105 HP), hit, and did 36+9-10=35 damage.

The tarrasque (stunned, prone) took A Reaping Strike, which was a critical miss! Ironboot is unable to act until his next turn! ... not a big deal, really, though in another battle it might cost him some opportunity attacks and immediate actions. Elic's Radiant Brilliance burst and hit for 30-10=20 damage.

Elic now sustains the Astral Storm, hits, and does 22+9-10=21 damage. I then uses Lance of Faith, hits, and does 24-10=14 damage and gives Ironboot +2 to his next attack.

Round 5
Darjin again uses Sly Flourish, CRIT! 37+26-10=53 damage. Se then uses Critical Opportunity... but misses. She then sustains the flurry.

Ironboot uses Mountain Breaking Blow, but misses. His Divine Miracle lets him recall his Cruel Reaper power.

HP sustains Delban, taking 20 damage (157 HP), but misses for 50/2+12-10=27 damage.

Ea casts Magic Missile, takes 13 damage (92 HP), and does 25+13-10=28 damage.

The Tarrasque is missed by Reaping Strike... gets a 4+5-2=7 on its saving throw.

Elic sustains the storm, hits, does 26+16-10=32 damage. he then casts Lance of Faith, hits, and does 27-10=17 damage and gives Ironboot a +2 bonus.

Round 6
Darjin uses Sly Flourish, CRITS again for 37+18-10=45 damage. She then sustains the flurry.

Ironboot misses with Cruel Reaper.

HP sustains Delban, taking 16 damage (141 HP), misses, and does 50/2+10-10=25 damage.

Ea casts Magic Missile, takes 15 damage (77 HP), hits, and does 27+15-10=32 damage.

The Tarrasque is missed by Reaping Strike. GETS A 15 ON ITS SAVING THROW. She's at 152 HP. Will she get to act?

Elic sustains the storm, hits, does 31+14-10=35 damage. He then casts Lance of Faith but misses.

Round 7
Darjin uses Sly Flourish, hits, and does 36+21-10=47 damage.

Ironboot then hits with Cruel Reaper for 44-10=34 damage, shifts 2S, makes his follow-up attack, but misses.

HP sustains Delban, taking 17 damage (124 HP), and misses, doing 62/2+12-10=33 damage.

Ea casts magic missile, takes 17 damage (60HP), hits, and kills the Tarrrasque (it's impossible for Ea to do less than 20 damage, so the 3 HP the Tarrasque had left is no challene).

My thoughts after I get back from watching Dr. Jones kick ass.

"And then the second Tarrasque showed up..."

No, seriously, I want to see those PCs fight a second Tarrasque after expending all the resources they did against the first one.

I know it's a solo monster but I would probably still have included some lesser threats to draw fire away from the big guy. Some minions, a natural hazard (perhaps an ongoing earthquake that only affects medium-sized creatures), some flying artillery... Anyway, this is an interesting read and it makes me feel that any worries I once had about not feeling epic enough at high levels are unfounded.

yeah

I find the monsters (especially the supposedly epic ones) quite pathetic.

I have already told my players that expect creatures to be updated to how they SHOULD be....espec stuff like liches, dragons, demons, and demon lords....

They said bring it on :) hehe

They may be a bit cocky but take pity on them. At least don't set them against Irontooth unless he is solo and they are fresh. (And have a pet Terrasque).

Since the players didn't get a chance to taste the Big T's power, you should run it again!

I assure you this time they will not be as lucky

I second this. It would be only fair.
