I don't think monsters will use the same rules as player characters in this respect. That is, strength modifier is not applied to melee damage.
Then where is the +4 coming from? I think you are right about monsters not using the same rules as characters in that, as others have mentioned, they won't add 1/2 their level. To not add their STR bonus doesn't make sense to me.

I'd like to see more examples of 4e stat blocks before I make any final decisions, but I have to say that I like what I see so far.

They do seem to add Str to damage rolls.

Ya, in Saga its 1/2 heroic level to damage rolls. Most monsters don't have levels in a heroic class.

But if you look at the monster statblocks they all add half their level to their damage.

It's probably just HP damage (per round). Some official 4E article said how wierd it was that warforged DR was applying to poison damage.

Weird, but could be simply the -5 penalty for being distracted. Spot must have been a typo.

That probably just points out that it's a humanoid whose soul and body are indistinguishable. Other outsiders probably will be immortal beasts, immortal elementals (or perhaps immortal oozes?)...

Shouldn't be much different from devilsight.

That's because it is not a regular ranged attack, but a special attack. If it were, it would be listed as Ranged in bold, instead of Spine Rain in bold. It's a standard action and has range of 10 squares. What I do NOT get is the "+9 Dex".
A first hint for advancing or otherwise changing the monster? Like some supernatural abilities in 3rd edition are ability based (in fact all that require a save)? If you change its Dex Modifier, this will also have to be modified)
I would really prefer this to be true, even do away with ability scores altogether, leaving only the modifiers... but the damage bonuses point out to the +1/2 lvl + ability mod. theory.

I very much doubt this. If armor gave DR instead of an AC bonus, there would be no need for AC separate from Reflexes. Also, not even SWSaga dared to go there, why would we expect D&D4 to do it?
Reflex and AC are separate things, but they are both defense scores that must be beaten. At least that's my understanding. No AC = DR, and I think it is better this way.

A> I'm happy that there's only a "bloodied" condition and not others for 1/4hp, 1/16th hp, etc.

2>I wonder if Resist Fire 20 works like Energy Resistance in 3.X or if it's an ablative pool, like extra HP just for fire. Didn't one of the previews talk about a wizard's fire resistance getting blasted away by a dragon's breath or something?

I just looked the 3.5 stats of the creatures. Wow. That's a bit of cleansing. The 4e does not have anay spell-like ability, even while one of them (disguise self) was very important, plot wise.

However, disguise self is not that important when you factor in the monster's role.

Don't forget it is marked as a "devil". Perhaps they've put such stuff into the (devil) subtype - plus: Spinagons are not really infiltrators or tempters... They're much more of "attack" monster. Rank-and-file mooks...

Cheers, LT.

Perhaps the MM entry will still have Disguise Self listed, but it isn't really used in a typical battle with its given role.
