[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

Although Doren has never made it quite as far as the Vale, he knows a bit of information regarding the people there. Thomas, however, seems to be the resident expert on the history of the White Vale.

The White Vale was the first historically recorded inter-tribal government, formed several centuries ago. It was originally peopled by the peaceful fey who emerged from the Gray Grove after escaping oppression by their ancestral enemies. They set up an interracial counsel that quietly governed the elves, eladrin, and gnomes who lived there. Eventually, a "monarchy" was put in place, in which a ruler was selected by the counsel to rule over day-to-day affairs. A wise eladrin woman named Spearwhisper was the previous queen. She and her husband Rowan watched over the people of the forest and were the first to facilitate diplomatic relations with Black Lake and also helped in the wars against The Evil One.

Two years ago, after the death of her husband, Queen Spearwhisper abdicated the throne. She was replaced by her daughter, Vera Springseer, as Queen. Queen Springseer is an inexperienced ruler, but is genuinely beloved by her people. Rumors persist that she is seeking a husband.

The people of the White Vale mostly worship Adele, with an emphasis on natural beauty and generosity. Queen Springseer is the High Priestess of Adele, and keeper of her legendary staff - the staff that smote The Evil One forever.

The former queen, Spearwhisper, still lives in the White Vale with her daughter, and acts as a mentor.

This royal family is closely related to the royal line of the drow who once lived in the Black Forest (far to the North, but connected by the Gray Grove). The drow were supposedly wiped out before Munsu's ascension to godhood in order to wipe out any trace of his mortal bloodline.

[sblock=ooc]Now we just need Torath, I think. Then I'll update your progress.[/sblock]

Torath had never left the Isles till he went on the strange piligrimage with the monks. He was still getting use to breathing without the smell of the sea in every breath, but exploring something new had him excited.

Taking a spot in the center and quietly walking along, his mind wonders to the mysterious Cloak and if Munsu truly is their head.

[sblock=OOC] Sorry I didn't post sooner when I read the other day I couldn't decide if Torath had learned anything about the world as a boy. So I didn't know what check to make. Going to play he isn't big on geography but the history of the Evil One and The Four, he knows well. [/sblock]

[sblock=ooc]I took the liberty of rolling a History check for Torath, which resulted in a natural 20. So here is what Torath learned in school about Munsu.[/sblock]

Torath's mind wanders back to the lessons the masters taught him in the monastery. He remembers something that one of his instructors, a young, steely-eyed monk named Shogun, said in class.

"In order to understand Munsu, you must understand how he was in life. History tells us that he was an elf, and that he was a master thief. He adventured with his brother, Bayne, among other heroes. Munsu, however, realized that once they defeated The Evil One, they would ascend to godhood. Before this happened, they say, Munsu decided to have one more night of fun before they went into battle against The Evil One's hordes."

"Munsu, along with his brother, went to the Black Forest, to a dark mountain that housed a race of elves known as the drow. They battled their way through an entire army of the dark elves, slaying each mercilessly. Finally, they reached the heart of the mountain, where the young queen waited hopelessly for her army to stop the intruders. While Bayne held off the rest of the advancing drow, Munsu coerced (or perhaps worse) the queen into sleeping with him."

"Afterward, he and his brother killed the rest of the drow, leaving only the violated queen in her mountain kingdom. Munsu the Cunning and his brother murdered an entire city of elves over the course of that day, all because they knew that they would soon ascend to godhood and be beyond reproach."

"So this is what you must remember when thinking about Munsu: you must not consider him within any context aside from his own. It will not do to compare his morality to Adele's or his wisdom to Blackmoor's. Instead, Munsu must be viewed as a sort of controlled chaos, from which any manner of wickedness might spring."

Another disconnected lesson reminds Torath of what he knows of The Cloak:

"The Cloak was created by an assassin-for-hire named Mordenkrad, who purchased the services of mercenaries and rapscallions in order to conduct clandestine criminal activities. This group was formed well over a hundred years ago. After the rise of The Evil One, a mercenary named Valencia Blackblade infiltrated it and took it over, using it to combat The Evil One's forces. After a long reign of shady dealings after the death of The Evil One, she was usurped by a tiefling named Teach. Teach took control of The Cloak shortly before Munsu and the other gods defeated The Evil One for good."

[sblock=ooc]I'll post an update to your traveling as soon as I get out of class around noon.[/sblock]

As the sun begins to descend behind the distant horizon, you arrive at the edge of a heavily-wooded glen. The sound of birds' songs bring a sense of wonderment and beauty to the place. This is the edge of the White Forest.

Before you have a chance to get used to your surroundings, a young, wry eladrin drops down from the boughs above. He lands on his feet, and with a grin, extends his hand. He addresses you with an unpolished, clumsy accent, but a well-practiced manner of speech.

"You must be the agents Captain Scultone sent. I'm Bounder - Queen Springseer's bodyguard. I'll take you to her immediately. Are you ready?"

Bounder seems like a smart but overconfident young man. He's dressed in traditional fey hunters' armor, and he carries a pair of daggers, a longsword, and a flask on his belt. A ranger's longbow is slung over his back.

He motions for you to follow him into the heart of the forest.

DM Note: Do not read the below sblock if you are not IG or Shayuri.
[sblock=BAERN & THORN ONLY]Baern and Thorn notice something unusual about Bounder. He's carrying a bow, but with no arrows. Something about his manner of speech indicates that he's lying. Is this hunter really who he says he is?[/sblock]

Baern eyes the guard suspiciously. "'Tweren't any indication that Lady Springseer even knew we were comin', at least not by my reckonin'." Baern finishes his thought silently, still eying the eladrin thoroughly. Consciously or otherwise, his grip tightens on his hammer.

"In fact... why would the captain have given us our parcel if the queen already knew we were coming?" Doren said following Baern's comment.... something about this didn't seem right at all as he swung his holy symbol into his hand from this resting place which dangled from his wrist. Doren was careful not to mention what the letter they had entailed in case this wasn't someone we should be spreading news to.

"Pertinent questions," Thorn said as she started to circle around behind the 'bodyguard' to cut off his escape. "Which I'm sure have pertinent answers. Someone keep an eye on the trees. He may be a decoy or distraction."

"A trap? By Munsu's eyes I will not be captured again." Torath says drawing his newly enchanted blade. "What proof do you have that you are from the Queen?"

Torath takes no action against the man but it is obvious that he is not going to follow him.

Bounder is taken aback, although he seems more offended than worried.

"Now, now, let's not be hasty with those blades, my friends. I obviously don't have proof of who I am. I don't have a summons from the queen or anything like that. I am, however, wearing the official uniform of a royal guard. If that is not enough for you, please allow me to leave so that I may return with a written message from Mistress Springseer. You can do that now, my dear friends, or you can deal with the scorn of her majesty later. The choice is yours."

"If the Queen would scorn us for doing our jobs, then she may need more help than even we can provide," Thorn says mildly. "Any thug can steal a royal guard uniform. If you can prove your identity, do so. Otherwise don't waste our time."

"Speaking of wastes of time...what happened to your arrows?"
