[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

"We will," Thorn answers absently from the corner she's parked herself in.

"Your Highness, are there any chambers in the palace or grounds that are warded against eavesdropping, or scrying? We should no longer assume that the walls do not have ears when making plans."

"Yes, Lady Thorn. This temple of Adele is warded from all kinds of scrying - including this very room. However, we don't have the resources to ward the rest of the Vale. Nothing you say within these walls can be heard by the keen ears of the wicked."

"It is an honor to serve thee m'lady." Torath says when the queen asks for the group to stay. He listens to the Lady Thorn, a look of respect on his face.

She to is a knight, and although she may not look or act it, her powers and capabilities round out my own as does these others. He thinks while looking at each member of the group in turn.

"Maybe the first thing is an escape plan and safe haven, for if the Vale should be attacked in mass," he says to all present.

[sblock=OOC] Wouldn't worry DF sometimes RL kicks people in the butt for a week here and there. I have the bruises to show it. :p [/sblock]

Thorn nods, looking pleased for the first time in quite awhile.

"Good. Now, getting out of here isn't a good idea. One, the queen can't rule if she's on the run, and the Cloak's purpose might be just as well served chasing her away as by killing her. Two, here we have a home base advantage. We know the land, and the people are loyal and spirited in defense. The Cloak will track her wherever she goes, so we'd just be forfeiting those advantages."

"Now, I can double for the Queen," she offers, "but that leaves us with the question of what to do with the real one while I'm standing in for her."

"She is to stay in here where no eyes or ears can get to her besides our own. Now I'm more than well aware M'Lady Springseer that limiting an eladrins movements is like death to them, you people like to roam free. However unless we can expand the nature of the scrying area beyond this building I feel this is the best place to keep you. I want would like a DISCRETE doubling of the guards on this building and we'll go about our normal daily activities as usual. Also, I'd like word dropped that Thorn perished in the fight with the assassin and now she AND Thomas are dead and gone. This gives us a reason for her not to be seen as she poses as the queen and the upper hand with numbers when they DO show themselves once more to make another attempt at your life m'Lady." Doren utters softly as if he'd planned similar situations before.

Doren turned to his allies and fellow Knights and Lady for thoughts and pointers of changes to his plan.

"A wise plan, my friends. Let us put it into effect - immediately."

The queen motions to one of the attendant priests.

"You - alert the guards that Lady Thorn has perished due to grievous wounds suffered from her battle with the assassin."

The priest nods in submission, then strides briskly out of the room.

Springseer commands another priest.

"You - please locate Bounder, captain of the Rangers. Send him in."

"Yes, m'lady." The priest scurries out, cowed by Springseer's sudden proactivity.

Momentarily, Bounder enters the temple.

"Bounder, these knights have decided upon a plan that may yet save us from this encroaching threat. Double the guards around this temple and summon all rangers from their patrols. Gather them into defensive positions around the grove."

"Yes, queen."

Bounder exits the temple hurriedly, and Queen Springseer wastes no time. She ducks behind an altar and emerges wearing a modest set of priestess' robes. Her royal garments are folded into a pile. She offers them to Thorn.

"Lady Thorn, please be careful. By Adele's breath, we may yet survive this."

Later that night: the guards have been posted all over the White Vale. The entire city is in a state of high alert. Rumors circulate that the newly knighted Lady Thorn has passed away in the night - the effect of some lingering poison from the assassin's cowardly blade.

The queen and her cadre of loyal knights patrol the grove, maintaining an aura of vigilance, while a newly anointed priestess waits patiently in the wings of the temple.

Suddenly, out of the trees, comes Bounder.

"Lady Springseer! Come quickly! An armada approaches from the coast! The coastal defense force has slowed them, but I fear they may not be able to stop them before they land and make their way inland. We must rally here or at the coast, and soon!"

Doren perks at the alarm of Bounders voice his voice calling back in the darkness...

"Bounder!? Can you estimate their numbers?! Can the city be defended from such an assault from this many or is there another area closer to the coast that we can bottle-neck the emerging force?!

If we can narrow their front we can minimize our causalities!"
the priest yells as if he had seen, or at least read up on his war like tactics.

"Ready a priest to the sending ritual stones to send word to the Captain in case we need to ask for reinforcements!"

Doren stepped out of his watching stoop in the darkness. The power in his voice more confident for some reason. It seemed it was coming into his own as a true leader yet he was still humble enough to hear words of constructive criticism.

[sblock=OOC] Only the members of our group know that Thorn is posing as the queen correct?? [/sblock]

Torath adjust his sword and shield, as if the enemy were already here. He mutters a short prayer to The Four, asking that they each provide him the ability to defeat this force.

"Why not go and have a quick look ourselves, Doren?" he asks. "First hand knowledge being far better, I would think."

Doren nods his head softly to Torath... he was in fact right after all... he would not get the information he wanted unless he looked the situation over himself.

With that he turned and waited for who was willing to come with him down to the coastal area to check out the situation....
