[4e] The Wolfcrown, Chapter 1

QUEEN'S GROVE

Thorn's barrage of strikes pierce the enemy's very soul. As Thorn tears her would-be attacker to pieces, his screams echo throughout the Queen's Grove. After the assault, only bits of bloody flesh and tissue remain. The assassin has been slain, and for now, the grove is quiet.

The Cloak's army of bravos and thugs readies its charge. The first wave of enemies rushes at the front line of elven swordsmen. Their blades clash, and the elves and assassins cut each other down in about equal measures.

The clamor of steel echoes throughout the canyon and along the beach. The glimmer of night bathes the whole battle in radiant moonlight.

In the distance, a second wave of enemies beaches and prepares an assault.

Doren quickly steps to fill the position of his fallen elven ranger standing directly beside his fellow night as he looks up the the archers and points his mace to the back of the line pressing forward...

"NOW my archers... fell them in the back quickly! Doren said as he gave the word for the archers to fire before taking a mighty swing and the thug before him!

Gazing down dispassionately at her would-be killer, Thorn wiped her sword off on a scrap of his clothes, and slide it back into the sheathe at the small of her back. Her armor vanished, and she once again was in the visage of an elvish queen.

For a moment she stood absolutely still, listening to the quietest of noises. Then she frowned and strode away, towards the Palace itself. She'd check on the real Queen, then get a status report from the commanders. If the city was quiet, then it would be time to march out and join the fight at the pass.

STRATA'S PASS

Doren's attack misses by a considerable margin, but the weight behind his thrust is more than enough to hold the enemy back for a moment. The thug who dodged the attack glares at the priest!

Squeal's trident scrapes past the head of one the attackers, slowing the enemy but provoking his ire. This thug, an orcish brute, scowls at the warforged and grunts an unintelligible curse.

The archers fire at the back of the mob, picking off a handful of enemies as they advance. The front rank of swordsmen, highly trained and deadly, lunges into the fray, cutting into the thuggish advance. The back ranks of swordsmen form a tight phalanx in order to stop any chargers lucky enough to break the front lines.

Torath, a beacon of power in the middle of this raging battle, smashes through the first line of enemies to stand among the vanguard.

[sblock=To Holyman]It's called a shift.[/sblock]

The thug army, in a daring counterattack, shift as far around the heroes as they can, attempting to cut a swath through the elven phalanx. Several more of the elven swordsmen fall, and Doren is caught off-guard with a slightly painful smack to the shoulder.

THE QUEEN'S GROVE

Thorn slinks into the palace, ready for anything. What she finds, though, is an anxious Springseer pacing the halls of the lower chambers. In a hushed tone, the queen addresses Thorn.

"Lady Thorn, the captains have informed me that the battle has just begun. We have a tactical advantage, but we will surely lose many soldiers. Captain Rowan and Bounder have reported that the city is quiet. I hate to ask more favors of you, but our army may need your help. Will you go to Strata's pass?"

Doren looked about the failing ranks of the elven force... things were not looking good and before he could have a chance to react he felt the sting of a weapon to his shoulder. Doren's face turned into a full wince as he turned to try his hand at cracking the thug over the head, the same one he tried for last time. Before he does so he looks back over his shoulder and shouts to the elven line.

"HOLD the line my elven friends... we MUST hold them here or the city will be overrun! Archers do not let you aim fail you and my rangers I am with you! We MUST NOT FAIL!" Doren barked as he took his swing.

Thorn hesitates...a single assassin like that could quite possibly have killed the Queen. Did that mean they only sent one, or that was the only one that had shown his face so far? She still had visions of trios of assassins, popping unopposed into shadowy, pre-scouted corners of the Vale, then sweeping down upon the hapless city while their brothers kept the army busy at the pass.

But what good was keeping the Queen safe in the palace if the pass fell? The Queen would be just as dead by army as by assassin.

Maybe there's such a thing as TOO paranoid, the changeling thought wryly...and bowed to the Queen.

"I'll go. Stay with your Captains, Queen. And send with me whatever forces the city can spare. The men at the pass could use some good news right about now."
