4e - Thunderspire Labyrinth - OOC

Yeah, you've really decimated them. Well played, although I hope the upcoming battles are a little more dynamic with larger areas. This one actually flies in the face of their own recommendations of location with a small area with a choke point.
Very true.

Yay merciless destruction of our foes! Go us!

Actually in thinking about the "choke point"....

With the kegs of alcohol provide a dynamic opportunity to do things like set people on fire and climb around...

Which sort of supports the idea of dynamic action; i.e. it's a "chokepoint fight" that smart PCs can turn into "an opportunity to flank".

Trying to encourage people to think out of the box.
OK. I'll stop with the buzzwords now.

Well... according to the module you actually can't climb over the barrels, and the barrles are empty in the modules as written as well. I hope the added elements lent a more dynamic feel...

I know I definitely enjoyed those elements in the fight. Thanks for saying yes, Renau1g.

On a side note, I have to say that that article is having a significant impact on the way that I DM. I've been on the other side of a DM's realism-based decisions and been frustrated, and I am sure that I have similarly frustrated players in the past. I like this new approach.

I think this is what is one of the best aspects of the designers of 4E getting the "math right". Because now... using the "DM's perogative" of adding a +2 or -2 to any target number to do something outside of the rules as written, actually has an appreciable affect and is useful. Especially when it comes to adjucating the amorphous "Acrobatic Stunt" action (which is written into the Acrobatics skill, but has no mechanical rules to apply to anything).

In the games I've DM'd... when players ask about knocking their opponents over tables, leaping off of bars and over their opponents to avoid OppAtts, throwing plates at someone's hand to make them drop a scroll... I just select TNs, apply any DM perogratives as needed, and let them do it (even if these sort of Trip & Disarm attacks and movement ideas aren't actually written into the rules).

It just makes things that much more fun for people. Why stop them from doing these kind of stunts if they come up with them?

Especially as the stunts are much more fun and exciting than just, Riposte Strike, or other at-will...

I really enjoyed the Iron Heroes books, they got my mind really thinking about how a battlefield can be used to change the way the fights go, rather than just the abilities of the characters. Now terrain, etc. are a big part of 4e, which helps out with my preperation for my RL game.
