4th Ed Monk?

Hopefully the monk will be changed to a base fighter type class with a set of good feats and/or talents that gives all the mystic martial arts goodness.

Then again, I would have thought the same thing for the ranger, and that turns out to be a base class.

There's been no mention of the monk whatsoever. A lot of people are predicting that it will not be in PHB, replaced either by an unarmed combat talent tree for the fighter, or given as a complete class in a later book, maybe one dedicated to oriental adventures.

The design article on the Wizards website about classes talks a lot about different weapon fighting styles, and unarmed could easily be one of them.

I hope they merge monks and swordsages, much like they're doing with ranger and scout.
A wuxia martial artist that can be as adept with weapons as unarmed? That would be nice, though probably better suited to a supplement than the core rules.

Why in particular? The monk is already an odd duck; it's not simply an unarmed combatant (in theory, the best way to do that would be by using feats or some talent tree-like mechanic, which 4e supposedly won't have), but rather a Shaolin knockoff. Changing it to a wuxia-style martial artist would be generalizing it, if anything. You could use such a character to represent any kind of mystical fighter (a kensei, Jedi, or holy warrior even).
