4th Ed Monk?

I think the monk is the most likely class to be dropped from the core, even moreso than the bard.

It's a shame really - even though the monk mightn't fit thematically with some campaigns, it's a class that been around for a long time. And it doesn't even have to represent Eastern Shaolin type characters either, it can represent types like the Bloodguard from Donaldson's novels.

...there's removing sacred cows for the sake of progress, and then there's trampling on tradition for little benefit. I'll leave it to each individual to decide which category dropping the monk should fall into.

Has anyone heard if there is going to be any changes to the Monk come 4th Ed?

No. He's dead. DEAD! Bwahahaha!

Sorry, not a Monk fan. I'm sure he'll make an appearance at some point. And hopefully not be uber lame and based on Eastern culture.

In 3E, if you want a pure brawler but don't want to use the Monk class, you simply take the Ranger class and unarmed combat feats. You might need a level of Fighter in there.

I find the continual insistence by some posters that the monk should be excluded because it's "Oriental" or "Eastern" very irritating.

D&D is not set in medieval Europe, or a cognate of same. Deal with it.

How is doing 1d3 base damage going to scare anyone? Also the inability to dodge.

Too true. The monk sucked for many mechanical and flavor reasons that had nothing to do with continent of origin :D

Heh. Quirky (and probably weak overall) as the Monk was, it's still my favorite class. I just hope they do the Monk justice this time and make it a truly worthwhile class, in whatever form it ends up taking. I'm rather liking the idea of blending it with the Swordsage class.

I'd be suprised if they make the Monk a fighter off-shoot, considering much easier to make fighter varient classes like the Barb and the Ranger made the cut as core classes. The monk easily has enough potential abilities to fill up it's own talent trees and then some.

The fighter could easily get some sort of unarmed ability options to function as a more down to earth brawler, though.

WotC_Logan confirms that Monk is in on a post here on EN World. I'm... befuddled.

It seemed to me that he strongly implied it was in, but stopped short of confirming it.

Maybe splitting hairs, but in this atmosphere of speculation, I think it's important to be precise. ;)
