4th edition: Not happy with the new direction.

Last time I checked this was the 4th edition discussion forum, not the only talk about 4th edition in a good light forum. I am going to talk about the new direction that 4th edition has gone and why I want the direction to change. If you share the same feelings then that's great, if not then that's great to but don't come here and disrupt the thread just because you think the mod is going to shut it down.

Essentials and the design going forward is not what I want out of D&D. I really don't even know where to start when I try and get someone new to start playing D&D. I don't like Essentials, but I find myself steering people towards the Heroes of ______ books. I started to like the pre-E style of 4th edition but with Essentials and the new direction that has been thrown out the door.

I'm ready for a complete reboot of the game and there are several things I want in that new direction.

I guess I'm just not really sure I understand all this 'new direction' stuff. I can't really say what I like or don't like about it because I am not really sure what I'd be talking about.

1) 4e is a new direction compared to 3.5 and other editions, at least arguably. Depending on what you find important in the game you might describe it as a radical new direction, a step back towards AD&D, or an evolution of 3.5.

2) Essentials is sometimes called a new direction in 4e. Again how you look at things determines whether you even think it comprises a coherent body of different rules or is just a fancy name for another splat book.

3) People say there is a new direction at WotC since whenever (exactly when or if being another matter of opinions).

4) There are all sorts of speculations (not even rumors) about some new direction of D&D that will be '5e' or something based on Mike Mearls' ruminations on game theory.

I'm not sure which of these ARE new directions, and I'm definitely not sure which one you're talking about, or maybe more than one or a totally different one.

Anyone want to go out for tacos?

Hard or soft? Chicken or beef?

Seriously though, I don't understand the hate for WotC trying to please as many people as possible. With 4e "classic", there were people who complained about "my fighter forgetting how to swing his sword". Then with essentials, they introduce new, simpler options and people complain that its not the same as "classic" -- which of course, was entirely the point.

Now personally, I'm not a big fan of most of the essentials classes. But I know people who are and that's great. In our games we have essentials characters running side by side with "classic" characters and it works perfectly fine without anyone feeling underpowered, etc.

The bottom line is, as long as we have brains, people will disagree. Nothing will ever change that.

There are not tacos here. So, I'll send you out to get some.

*boot*

Okay, DEFCON1 will not be spending his time looking for tacos in other threads, rather than griping here about his case of the munchies in here.

Perhaps if you started by talking about the things you want in the game, then we can have an actual conversation?

Also, just my opinion, but if you DO want to have an actual discussion, perhaps starting your threads in a less aggressive manner would help?
