4th edition, what did you know and when

I was almost certain it was going to be announced at D&D Experience and I was disappointed it wasn't. Everyone will call me a liar, but with all of the stuff for the Digital Initiative, the licenses, the weak schedule, I figured it was coming at Gencon this year. That's pretty much why we haven't updated our website at all. We were kinda in a holding pattern. Depending on how all of the licensing stuff works, we're planning on having Violet Dawn at Gencon next year.

Why would they call you a liar? It wasn't like it took a lot of brains to figure out it was coming. The cancellation of Dungeon and Dragon magazines should've clued everyone in.

Because everyone on EN World and everywhere else has been saying for the past three years that 4e will be announced at Gencon, at D&D EXP, at GTS, etc. I just don't think anybody will believe me with all of the rampant speculation that has been going on for so long.

Noted in another thread on the reaction at the D&D eXP. when asked about 4th ed.

The 4th Edition Question gets a lot of laughter.

"I'm surprised it took this long for someone to ask that. It's going to come at some point. It's a long ways away. You'll get an announcement when that happens, but it's a long ways away. We have a lot of good stuff coming out through 2008."

A long ways indeed.

I was pretty convinced of its near future arrival as early as November last year and said so at many forums (including this one). For me the big red flags were that official denials were ramped up considerably, licenses were expiring and not being renewed, and a new publishing model was being introduced. All of these things, from my standpoint as both a man who was alive during past new edition announcements and a man with an unnatural grasp of consumer economics, indicated that a new edition was very nearly upon us.

I suspected when
a. when they started releasing the new subsystem like Bo9s that tend to split the player base and the second round of complete books.
b. started moving to adventures

These were things Monte warned would be a precursor.

Blu-ray or HD DVD?

Xbox360 or PS3?

Plasma, LCD, or Projection?

Wired or wireless home networking?

iTunes, URGE, or Napster?

I just can't decide. :D

True. Course, it's kinda silly that it even matters. Sometimes I think that message boards are really just all the nasty parts of High School ripped out of context and distilled into a dark and evil brew.
