$5 4E PHB @ GenCon!

Not really. Its all a matter of timing. It smacks of Pathfinder being the bizz of the ball, and then not having something that powerful marketing wise.

*shrug* But thats just my reading of it. I dont think it'll have any effect on Pathfinder at all, but thats how it has the appearance at a glance.
No, Pathfinder will, 100% undoubtedly sell out no matter what any competitor does at Gen Con. It will undoubtedly sell out on Day 1, possibly before lunch, if there aren't any reserves held back for later days. I don't think that was ever in question. And, AFAIK, WotC has nothing huge debuting at the con, at the level of a PHB2 or even an Eberron release, so this will get them some notice and news. (Witness: This thread.) Sure, there's AV2, but that's relatively minor, in the scheme of things. Oh, and an announced setting for which there won't be any products for sale, yet.

If you look at every smart marketing move as a metaphorical punch in the face to competitors, I think you should have a word with FFG about this whole "Rogue Trader" special edition thing, too. ;) Begrudging WotC for doing something kind of cool just smacks of sour grapes. IMO, FWIW, etc.

Universal praise?:)

You missed the threads and blogs about how the $10 Pathfinder pdf will kill LGSs, devalue RPGs, and lead to the end of the gaming industry?

You are probably better off for having skipped the hysteria and teeth gnashing.

Yeah, I guess I did.

I saw a couple of posts about them in the threads I read but they were heavily outweighed by those saying what a good idea it was.

If there was a lot of those threads it doesn't surprise me though. You can't please everyone it seems.
