How long do you expect to play that character?
Depends on the system. OSE I'm always prepared with a backup character as no matter my stats although I hope to survive I expect to die; 5e It'll be for the entire campaign if all goes well.

So ... if you expect your PC to die quickly anyway it just adds another difference in what we want out of the game. I've always, going back as far as you want, wanted and expected my PC to be played for countless hours. Character gen makes up an infinitesimally small amount of time I'm going to spend with the character. I'm invested in them before pencil hits paper.

Unless they're an elf of course. Those have the lifespan of a mayfly. ;)

As always no one true way yada, yada, yada.

I assume being an adventurer is a deadly profession (or should be) and resolve to get as much fun out of my PC as possible before something happens to them or the campaign ends.

@Oofta That's just the system though, OSE being based on old school DnD is quite deadly, I still want to play the character for hours and complete a campaign with them, but that just doesn't seem to happen.

5e, I fully expect to survive and get those countless hours out of playing the character, no matter the stats rolled.

I was just curious. Personally I don't want a high lethality game, no matter the system. At least not one I'm talking seriously.

Different strokes.

One of my current 3.5e campaigns has been going on since 1998 (originally AD&D 1e), the other since 2018. Both were rolled stats.

The 5e group I play in with stat buy goes back to 2000, with the current campaign like 2 years old.

Summary:
  • I prefer rolled stats.
  • You refuse anything but stat buy.
  • Remathilis agrees with you.

I think that covers everything. Let’s move on.
