Can D&D be used to make an Adventures of Dr. McNinja campaign?
Could I use D&D as the rule set for beauty pageants? Could it figure out which Miss State should be Miss America?
Can D&D do Steampunk?
What if wanted to run a campaigned based off of Breaking Bad?
Yes, it can. The question isn't "can you use it for ___" but "Should you use it for ___?"
Steampunk? maybe.
Breaking Bad? probably not
Miss America? probably best done with something totally unlike 5E.
Dr. McNinja? WHo? If that's your variant Highlander game, quite possibly, but the results are likely to be odd...
I can see certain genres really doing well as 5E adaptations.
But I can see many more that wouldn't.
I'd put Star Trek and Star Wars right on the border. I don't like them as class-driven nor attribute-driven settings; I much prefer them as skill driven ones.
