D&D 5E [5e] D&D 5e good spell combos

Dausuul

Legend
If you're going to have your familiar use the Help action, don't waste it on a cantrip. Have it Help the greatsword fighter instead. Wizardry is all about making best use of your allies.

In that vein, if you have a dwarf in the party who likes to live on the front line, invest in poison AoE. You won't get cloudkill for a while, but you're only one level away from stinking cloud, which is top-notch action denial. A dwarf with proficiency in Con saves is all but immune to poison effects; drop stinking cloud on a bunch of melee enemies in a tight space, then sit back and watch your bearded buddy go to town.

What if the familiar prepares a readied action to help, at the right time?

or does it have the problem of needing both Speed and an action?

Yes, it has that problem. You can't ready multiple actions.

I don't know that it's all about helping allies. It can be, but wizards are pretty good attackers in their own right. In my party, I do as much damage with my Fire Bolt as our fighter does with her axe. The monk in our party does the most damage per round but requires multiple attacks to do it. Help would only grant advantage to one of those attacks.

Evard's Black Tentacles + Grease. Enemies will have a hard time escaping your tentacles when they keep slipping and falling. Grease doesn't require concentration, so even a single caster can pull off this combo.

Slow + Blindness/Deafness. Badly screws over the enemy and works on just about any type of creature. Plus, since you get to pick your target(s), you can throw these spells onto your enemies with no risk to your friends. Like grease, blindness doesn't require concentration, so even a single caster can do this.

Disguise Self + Charm Person/Friends. Being hated after the spell wears off doesn't matter as much when you're disguised. You can even use this to frame someone by disguising yourself as that person and then making people hate them.

Wall of Stone + Stone Shape. Create a permanent stone wall, and then shape it. Great for creating your own structures.

Demiplane + Plane Shift. Create a demiplane, then craft a tuning rod for your demiplane to use with the planeshift spell. Later, you can use plane shift to send creatures to your demiplane, imprisoning them for later interrogation, or just to divide your enemies so you can fight them one at a time. You can also fill the demiplane full of water, traps, etc. to make a death trap. Sure, you could already kill enemies by plane-shifting them to the negative energy plane or whatever, but this way you don't have to miss out on the loot!

Contagion + Any other spell that requires a saving throw. You get to pick which disease you give them, and then they get disadvantage on the saving throws associated with that disease for at least 3 rounds. For fun and profit, hit their Con and have another spellcaster cast Finger of Death or Circle of Death.

The tingling means it’s working!
Hex works great with any spell that hinges on an ability check. Most illusions, for example. Or Telekinesis. Or Detect Thoughts.

The best combos are Concentration spells, so your Wizard will need a friendly Warlock. But it doesn't take much to convince a Warlock to cast Hex. :)
