D&D 5E [5e] Fate-like Points or bennies or... ?

Doors and Corners
I supremely digging all the groovy goodness of 5e. It's reading like the D&D version that could easily become my favorite.

What I am wondering, though, is if there is going to be a Fate-point or bennie or action point like thingy in the books. I suppose that if there is it'll be a variant rule roosting in the DMG. I just haven't heard of anything like it yet.

I know about inspiration, but I'm talking about a point resource that can carry over between encounters.

Has anyone heard anything?

I think the Lucky feat has three lucky points per long rest. So maybe some of the optional stuff will use the mechanics you are referring to. I really like the 5ed is borrowing from the best of many systems and streamlining them all. I had been trying to find different systems that clicked with me, and also thinking about how to combine my favorite features of different ones. 5ed seems to be just about right for me. Inspiration is working well at our table, for example.

Inspiration is, as far as i can tell, a limited form of Benny. Just ease up on the restrictions, and let each player start each session with three inspriation, and you'll be back to savage worlds. Right?

Yeah... Inspiration is a little bit different from Fate points in that you acquire them for playing to your BIFTs... but you don't have to spend them on the rolls and checks that fall under your BIFTs purview. Whereas you start with a pool of Fate points to start with and specifically spend to re-roll or add +2 to those checks that are directly related to the Aspect in question.

In Fate, you might have an Aspect called 'Intractable'. And when you make a poor roll or check on something where you being 'Intractable' (and thus better at it) might apply... you spend your point and re-roll. Whereas in D&D, if you had a Personality Trait of 'Intractable'... during the course of the game you just roleplay as Intractable and the DM will grant you an Inspiration point. This then can get spent at some later point for any type of roll where you want Advantage, even if the roll or check has nothing to do with being Intractable.

In truth... gaining Inspiration is the equivalent of Compelling your own Aspect in Fate, which grants you a Fate point. The only difference is that you don't need to spend that Inspiration/Fate point on a roll or check directly related to your BIFT/Aspect. It can be used on whatever check you want or even given away.

Personally... I don't know yet how I'm going to play it. While I really probably should give the BIFT/Inspiration rules a drive as they are written... I like the rules of Aspects/Fate enough to perhaps just use those rules anyway. I kind of prefer the idea of only spending your Inspiration point to gain Advantage on those checks directly related to one of your BIFTs. It highlights just how important that part of your personality is.

Well, kinda. Savage Worlds takes all the "luck" out of "HP" and gives them out as Bennies. With the Bennies, you get to decide where the luck goes -- Soaking (akin to HPs) or rerolling dice.

Remember, in FATE you can also spend those points on Aspects on the environment or NPCs! So, gaining inspiration is like compelling your own Aspect, and spending inspiration is like tagging an Aspect on the environment or a bad guy.

Good point!
