I have realized that 5e is being heavily screwed over by the massive weighting on 1e variants. It’s like giving them a 200 point head start. Which is not insignificant.

I am surprised that 3.5 is getting so much more love than 3.0.

3.5 felt like it came too soon and didn't fix much. . . On the other hand, while my view on 3.0 may have changed over the 16 years I played it, when it came out it had a much bigger impact and addressed many of my issues with 2E and adopted many of the rules my group was already using (grid combat, AoOs, Critical hits). People LOVED 3E when it came out - and I don't remember people "loving" 3.5 (more like grudgingly accepting its necessity at best - not that I thought it was necessary at all).

I mean it's the one everyone remembers. 3e was a thing for like 3 seconds.

I guess? In my circles everyone still called it 3E and only clarified one way or another if asked in detail - and at my tables we only incorporated what we wanted from 3.5 and left most behind. I never even bought or looked at a 3.5 DMG or MM!

I guess for me, as some who likes to hack at the rules and feels that D&D is something that exists outside of the books or any one ruleset, 3.5 felt superfluous. I was addressing issues with 3.0 (or any edition) from day one.
