4e committed the sin of not being what people expected. If you order a hamburger and you get served pizza, you’re going to be unhappy, even if you love pizza. It’s not that pizza isn’t good, it’s just not what you were expecting or in the mood for.

I say this not to disparage 4e, which I love, and not to say it isn’t D&D, which it is. Rather, I say it to acknowledge that 4e just didn’t resonate with a lot of folks who had an idea about what D&D was, who were put off when what the new edition of D&D wasn’t that.

And that's fair. I just wish people would stop taking that thing, and concluding from it, "Thus 4e was BAD and everything about it was BAD because it FAILED." Particularly with the stinger "...so anything (you like about) 4e SHOULDN'T be part of D&D now."

It would be as if the company ordered teriyaki for catering at a public-facing event, but got pizza. Then, instead of being merely disappointed, the customers start talking about how events should not only never serve pizza again, but should never even serve anything that contains bread or cheese.

5e put D&D back on Hasbro's good side, especially over the past year or so. That can only be a good thing for the future of the game.
