yeah, in my mind the likely winner will be Scout, Swashbuckler, or maybe Thief, with Arcane Trickster getting some support. but I could be wrong...

FWIW, those plus Assassin are the only thief subclasses I've ever seen played.
i've seen Inquisitive a few times, but vanishingly few Scouts. Mostly Arcane Tricksters, Swashbucklers, Thief, and Assassin.

Most Assassins only chose that archetype after the group decided that it's "surprised target" feature is instead "a creature that is surprised or unaware of your presence". I still don't need that much disguise based infiltration stuff in my Assassins, and the fact that it mostly just gets a boost in the first round of combat means that I don't really see the class features that often, but others like it I guess.

How's the Inquisitive in actual play? Reading it feels VERY limited.

It just feels like all you do is roll Insight all the time :p but I guess the Rogue has fairly limited design spaces in its subclasses.
Looking at the Arcane Trickster I’d disagree on limited design space. I think rather that it simply is a subclass that gives no new levers to pull, and thus joins thief, and possibly others, in the “hope you like the base class design because this is basically more of that!” archetypes.

Ever since the Soul Knife subclass was eliminated, I've been at a loss for a downvote...so I'm gonna let ya'll pick my next target! Let's see here...of the five people who downvoted Swashbuckler today:
one of you upvoted the Assassin,
one of you upvoted the Inquisitive,
another upvoted the Thief,
but two of ya'll upvoted the Arcane Trickster.

So there ya go.
Arcane Trickster 21-2=19
Assassin 6
Inquisitive 20
Mastermind 22
Phantom 6
Scout 21
Swashbuckler 24+1=25
Thief 22
