5ft' movement and range attack/cast spell

If someone is in mellee can take the 5ft' movement moving outside the threaten area of his enemy and then make a range attack or cast a spell without getting an attack of opportunity?

ps. I used to know the answer but all is confused in my mind right now after all these back and forths from 3rd to 4th edition games we have.

Yes.

As long as there is somewhere you can step to that is out of the opponent's reach (it doesn't work if you're flanked/surrounded or next to a wall), and as long as the ground you're standing on is normal enough that it doesn't impede your movement and prevent you from taking a 5' step, and as long as the opponent hasn't readied an action to attack you if you try this.

So, in most cases, yes it will work.
