I suppose, if you're a 4e-hating troll, it might be hillarious.

And if you're a 4e grubbing fanboy you'll rally to the defense despite the -HUMOR- tag?

Yes we all know 4e is not going to fail because they called some book a compendium, Gene is just taking a somewhat satirical look at our 2 and a half edition sample of the past. (I say half because while 1e didn't end on a compendium, UA was in many respects the compendium of its day, and what many consider the "beginning of the end" for 1e).

2e went out with magic item/wizard spell/priest spell compendiums...did it have a rules compendium too?

3/3.5 went the same way.

And so here we have 4e starting it's fledgling little life with...compendiums. Because you don't get the humor is no excuse to attack the commedian.
