6 Nations -- final weekend coming up!

This Saturday sees the final round of matches in this year's Six Nations -- the last one before the World Cup, no less!

So what will the final results be, who will be the big winners, who the sad losers?

Myself, I think France will be unhappy with their performances so far. They barely made it past Ireland, and didn't even turn up against England. Of course, Ireland will be disappointed with their performance against Scotland, despite the win, and the less said about the France game the better. So two of the main contenders for the World Cup failed to live up to expectations (although Ireland have also shown that they can produce fantastic rugby; the England game was a perfect example of how the game should be played).

On the whole, England performed better than expected, with the notable exception of the Ireland game. I feel that there is still a lack of belief there, and this will mean they will struggle to do well at the World Cup. But on the whole, a vastly improved team since the Autumn Internationals. But I don't expect them to make it beyond the quarter finals this autumn, if they even make it out of the group.

Wales ... well, what is there to say? Woeful. In their present form, I don't see them getting out of the group at the World Cup. Scotland are hot and cold, could be good, could be terrible. They have some good players, though, and might be a surprise.

To me, though, the great joy of the tournament have been Italy. To finally see them making good on the promise of the past few years is terrific. A massively strong pack now have a set of decent backs to do the scoring. Thoroughly deserved, and it makes the competition all the more interesting.

So on to the results for this weekend ... Myself, I can see Scotland putting in a blinder against France, putting them under pressure in the first 20 minutes and getting the better of them. Or it could go entirely the other way, it's that kind of match and they're both that kind of team ... Ireland will probably beat the Azzuri, and quite comfortably too. Sorry Italy, but the Irish forwards are not only strong but very accomplished, both as ball carriers and in the shady areas of the game. I don't think Wales will beat England: I think England's defence will stand firm against what has been a very mediocre Welsh attacking force this competition, and if England can produce the same attacking flair as they did on Sunday they might even be in with a chance for the title (well, I can dream, can't I?).

Overall standings at the end of the tournament: Ireland, England, France, Scotland, Italy, Wales.

Dioltach - I agree with the final standings. Not too sure about France & England – that’s a bit too close to call but I’m hoping for an Irish victory overall.

France haven’t really performed. I think they started to believe they’re own hype when they got the 2nd in the world ranking before the autumn internationals.

A pair of absolute spankings from the ABs should have woken them up. But apparently not…

Ireland are finally showing that Northern Hemisphere teams have flair, skill, grunt and they’re not afraid of taking some risks. Good to see and I’ve love to see the Irish make a semi-slot in the World Cup.

England – well where to begin, they won one team with what was a patched together team hastily put together based around injury problems. Doesn’t say much for Ashton sadly – I really hoped that he’d be the one to show me that the English can actually be a good team.

It’ll require a miracle for them to make the semi’s come September!

Wales: this makes me really sad. Wales used to be so good. They were entertaining, threw the ball around, took their chances. They played good rugby. I dunno what’s happened but they post World Cup they need to take a long, hard look at themselves for the future.

Italy: YAY it’s nice to see the smaller, less wealthy teams get some decent performances in and historically their first away win of the tournament. To me Italy are a classic example of what happens to the ‘smaller’ rugby nations when they get let in to play with the big boys. The Italian game has drastically improved ever since they got into the 6 nations, and while they have Kirwan as their coach of course ;).

I hate to disappoint you, Sidekick, but Kirwan has left Italy (isn't he the All Blacks assistant coach now?). They currently have a French coach, one Pierre Berbezier. He seems to have done a good job.

Anyway, I take it you haven't seen much in this Six Nations to worry you?

Sorry poorly worded - yeah I knew that Kirwan had left Italy, but if you look at their skills and squad, a lot fo the hard work and changes were pushed through by him. They're reaping the rewards from his tenure there.

Nah, Kirwin isn't in the AB set up. Thats the triumverate of Henry, Hansen & Smith. God's of rugby that they be.

Worry me as an All Black supporter? not really. Ireland maybe, France, when they turn up are good. But ultimately not much there to scare a full strength All Black side.

I'm pretty sure in a non knock out situation we could post a team without McCaw, Carter, Collins, the Fijian Flyers or Jack and still beat most of the Six nation teams comfortably.

I mean we played France in the Autum with 10 changes after england and still thumped them 45-3. They were ranked second in the world at the time as well...

It was nice to see the NH teams trying to bring up the skill levels in stuff like off-loading in the tackle, but you've got to make sure that you're buys can REALLY capatilise on that, ie are actually there to take the passes and use a gap.

I'll reserve judgement on who I think the semi-finalists will be until I've seen the Tri-Nations.

But I'm expecting NZ and either SA or Oz to be in the final 4 as well. The other two slots, the're up for grabs I reckon.

So, the final standings were France, Ireland, England, Italy, Wales, Scotland.

If I were Irish right now, I'd be absolutely gutted. Bad enough that the French sneak a last-second winner in their game, but then they go and do it again for the whole tournament.

As it is, I'm just depressed at Scotland's position. And it's not even as if I can claim it was bad luck, or that we were somehow robbed. Dear, oh dear...
