I would say that most old anime would be considered "not widely known" in North America and Europe. I think we have a rather specific set of interests, on this board, that would make us think otherwise.

Another gem, that was serious freakout material, was "Phase IV." It was also a mid to late '70s Sunday afternoon frequent flyer, plus on late night TV in the '80s.

Yeah I really like Phase IV. Nicely creepy and does a great job with its low budget and its concept.

I first saw it on Mystery Science Theater 3000, but I enjoy it as well, possibly better, without the jokes.

Phase IV only goes full SF at the end, of which there are at least two versions, one more grounded and one wildly fantastic.

Wait, what?!!

I’ve only seen one ending, which is kind of a psychedelic “we’ve reached an understanding” resolution. (Trying to be vague here.)

Is that the normal one, or the sci-fi one?

As far as I know, only the more grounded ending has been shown with the film, so I imagine that is the one you saw. The original, wilder ending has only been shown at special viewings.

If that's the case then I'm quite surprised. The ending that I remember from TV, as a kid, was pretty psychedelic.
